Heading on Saturday for a week in La Rosiere.
Looks like we timed it well with a big dump Thursday and Friday.
The ski school has a day trip to Italy on Thursday so really looking forward to that

The trip over to La Thuile is certainly a highlight though the two epic button lifts aren't something to look forward to!

Which part of the area are you heading to?
The forecast certainly looks good for this week and a large dump of snow! |
We are staying at Les Cimes Blanches in the Les Eucherts end. Certainly a welcome top up coming by the looks of it. |
Nice. We never really got down to Les Eucherts, other than while skiing and a quick hot chocolate stop in Le Flocon bar near the lift. So will make a point of taking the lit forest walk one evening for some food or a drink.

I think we will do the opposite at some point, I hear the forest walk is quite nice. We've got my 4 year old nephew coming, so anything with lights and snow will be great.

Any boots on the ground in La Rosiere with a "live" snow reports? The insta and web cams looks like the start of the weekends snow dump is in full swing.

Yes made it after an epic 5 hour transfer from Chambrey. Was carnage on the roads on Saturday with the weather and volume of traffic. The Grendermaine were stopping drivers half way up the mountain from Bourg and turning back those drivers without chains or socks. Our local driver had no fear, unlike his passengers
Huge amount of snow fall made for amazing conditions yesterday when the sun came out mid morning.
It's a lovely resort, very friendly and not so busy.
Pistes iced and carved up a bit this afternoon but to be expected.
Very impressed so far,

Clear blue sky's yesterday and today. Super conditions. The pistes are in great shape in the morning but deteriote as the day goes on. Not so bad that there's moguls but just a little noticeable.
Looks like your getting a little top up over the weekend so should be perfect for you guys next week
Someone recommended la competier above. Just second that if your looking for a casual pint, pizza, burger and game of foosball or ping pong.quite reasonable compared to other restaurants in the redort

We made La Competior our “usual” last year mainly for its proximity to the EFS lunch pick up point. We stayed for the beers, food and vibe.

Varies dramatically!!
Couple of rounds of drinks for 2 adults and two kids in the hotel 70 euro!
Have tried two other bars in town and looking at a tenner a pint or there abouts. Around 12 up mountain. 4 euro for a can of coke for the kids.
It's not a cheap resort by any means. But I've travelled all over with work in the last 12 months and it seems everything is expensive everywhere so its not that out of whack

Are we talking La Thuile or La Rosière? I’ve always found La Thuile to be a cheaper option but noticed last year that it’s changing - going more upmarket, prices increasing losing a bit of the old school charm
Last Feb, we got a beer and a glass of wine in Angela’s Cafe (La Thuile) for £8, came with a small tapas style plate too. Cocktails were €6, which I think is reasonably cheap. It is more pricey on the hill, €3-4 is about right for a coke, we tend not to drink alcohol while skiing so can’t comment on that.

When we first went, some 20 years ago Lan Rosiere was much cheaper than the big neighbours, and over the border was even cheaper.

YMMV...we went over to La Thuile yesterday and today (Thurs/Fri), and thought the conditions were better in Italy than in La Ros. Wind was incredibly strong in La Ros today (wasn't too bad first thing yesterday, but picked up during the day and looks like it stayed high overnight into today). Most of the pistes had been scoured pretty hard - that didn't leave them icy, but they were hard-packed and pretty scratchy. And the wind was super unpleasant on the lifts (especially Plan du Repos, which seemed to take all morning to drag us up through the gale). Italy had poor vis up top, but better below the top of the Chalet Express lift...although it was flat light everywhere. Snow was in really good shape though, both on piste (everywhere we went) and off piste in shady sheltered spots, and the Italian pisting meant you could generally trust the piste to be where it was supposed to be (and not 6 inches higher, as in some places in La Ros!). The Franco Berthod runs back into town were in particularly fantastic condition (skied here a few times and they've not been as forgiving before).
If you're skiing here over the next few days then all else equal I'd head for Italy. Snow and lunch both better

Day 3 on the slopes.
Sunday was very cloudy with flat light and high winds. I did attempt to get over to Italy, but having done both of the drags, genuinely couldn't even see where to go, so just turned around and came back to La Ros.
Yesterday and today 'look' beautiful, as in the sun is shining and skiing is so much easier with decent light of course.
But, windy as hell. Not bothering me whilst skiing, but the lifts are not much fun, and not very sociable as you can't hear anything apart from the wind.
How are the rest of the alps, wind wise, compared to La Ros? You get a few moments here and there when it stops and you realise how good the place is.
Loving it though, and hopefully will see lighter wind for the next couple of days. Please!

Those two button lifts are a chore at the best of times! Can imagine them in adverse weather!!
If its your thing, try to get to L'Antigel (on the Tetras home run) on a Thursday afternoon as they have a DJ outside and its a bit of a (tame) party environment!

You only need to do the first button and take a left and ski down to the chair or keep going to the bottom, it is more sheltered down there in the tree line. It can be how you described at the top of chaz dura area quite often I think. That is what I would do, then use bosco express and chalet express. You can do the blues on the plateau or lap reds 4 or 7, you need to go up to chaz dura to get across to 18 and 6 iirc so just leave that for if/when it clears.

Agree with you@Glosterwolf, I could have done that, but just couldn't see enough to have any idea where i was heading, so thought I'd try the 2nd drag to see it was any better at the end of it. It wasn't.
1st time at the resort, so no previous experience to draw from.
Pretty wind blown this afternoon, so having an early finish. Hoping the wind drops for the rest of the week.
@Roscoe, that could be a bit of fun, cheers.

I was there last year in mid March and only had one windy day from memory. Another was a white out but the rest of the time it was blue bird days!
Heading back in the first Easter week (28th-4th) so expecting the sun again but not looking forward to its impact on the snow!

Probably a wise move, if it was down that low I expect the viz would have been bad all the way down to the gondola top station on the la thuile side and not worth bothering with.@TheMikeSki,
Same week as us then @Roscoe, some fun in the sun and slush hopefully

Nice! Assume you've been before with your resort knowledge?
Last year, the afternoon's were like skiing in ice cream on some of the lower blue slopes, with big moguls. We have little ones in ski school (and lunch) with a pick up at 2pm, so we'd usually call it a day by then as it was too slushy to enjoy. Likely to do the same this time round!

@Roscoe, Went to La Thuile mid march last year, was really good. We prefer it on the warm and slushy side of good conditions when skiing as a family. I skied down to the petit bois chair in La Ros a couple of times last year, deep slush but still quite fun, you want to carve through it really when its like that, gets difficult to rotate when its that deep. My wife and daughters are the same regarding 2-3pm finish but I will ski until the end. We are staying next door to Le petit skieur. Will be taking some liquid wax.

@craftybob, The La Thuile ski school has two bases - one on the foot of the slopes next to the magic carpets opposite the Planibel, one at the top of Les Suches gondola. In my experience, lessons start at resort level at the start of the week but it’s worth checking your booking, if you’ve made one… strongly advise making a booking if not!

We've been based in La Rosiere so only used the EFS (French) for ski school. In EFS, you can start them at 3 years of age, though its more a mix of playing in the snow ( snow bikes, sleds, igloo's, etc) with some "on skis" time mixed in.

@Roscoe, apologies, a bit hectic at work since I've got back.
Didn't make it on the Thursday pm as was lapping over at 2800 as it seemed a little calmer (wind wise) over there, and the fact that it is 'red' only seemed to keep a lot of people away.
Snowed overnight on the Friday, so driving back was quite pretty. Full winter tyres, so no drama on the roads.
Days like last Wednesday show me how good it could be there - blue sky and minimal wind. Most other days it was blowing a gale, and always into your face on the lifts. It made the skiing ok for much of the day, but certainly some pretty wind blown pistes by the afternoon.
To be honest, the wind has put me off returning, which is a shame, as I enjoyed the resort and it was fairly quiet.
All in all, 7 of us on the trip and no injuries, so it was a win.

Disappointing for you that the wind caused that much interference to the skiing. It can be fairly exposed once above the tree line so will be impacted if the weather is not playing ball.
