@NoMapNoCompass, the thread has not gone one way or the other, it's different people with different opinions.
@GreenDay, I would be surprised if we see her back but agree that the effort has been mega, for the whole season not just the last week or so.

I only hope she has a swift recovery.
From the various reports it sounds like a complicated spiral fracture. But she has shown she is more than capable of coming back from the worst of the worst.

@NoMapNoCompass, absolutely!
For those of you who do Facebook, I thought this interview illuminated clearly her attitude to risk. I don't think she's lying or even kidding herself. It's just her unusual, maybe unique, outlook on life.

Pure guesswork on your part.

To say that her injury was not inhibiting her in any way during the race is ludicrous when this clearly was the case in the practice run.
|
Clear to you perhaps, but she still put up the 3rd bets time on one of those training runs.
But then nobody is suggesting it wouldn't have inhibited her in any way.

The commentary in this thread has gone from asking if it is wise to race with a fully ruptured ACL to denying that the same injury would have had any effect on her performance in the race and subsequent crash! |
Some people have indeed suggested the first. Nobody has suggested the second.
Most of the people who saw the crash are saying the last.

AFAIK, elite athletes are never fully fit, as there's always something not quite right, so performance is always slightly inhibited / compromised even if it's only in terms physiological condition to withstand the most aggressive tactical moves.

I think Vonn takes "Obsessive is the word that the lazy use to describe the dedicated" to a whole new level. "Foolhardy is the word that the cautious use to describe the fully committed" perhaps?
My take is that in the existential "bacon and eggs" question, Lindsey is the porcine warrior (committed) whilst her detractors are the eggs (merely involved).

As I mentioned miles above, bonkersly brave and probably more bonkers and more brave than even her peers in Down Hill skiing. A stand out cross generational talent.
I can’t even begin to imagine what it takes. There was a documentary a few years ago by Michael Johnson (400m runner one) about speed events and what it takes. He thought the downhill skiers were the extreme of the people he spoke to.
The others I just don’t fathom is the free climbers - just bonkers!

No one has a crystal ball and every dangerous sport is dangerous. No participant thinks that the worst will happen to them or there wouldn't be any dangerous sports. Nikki Lauda didn't think he'd end up in a fireball. But when he got out of hospital he pretty quickly got back into a racing car.
Lindsey Vonn probably more than anyone else understood the risks, just look at how many times and how badly she's been injured prior to this comeback. I would have prefered that this didn't happen and she probably does too, but if she doesn't regret a thing then it's not our place to either.
It's certainly not our place to criticise her.
I sincerely hope she makes a full recovery and enjoys the rest of her life in peace knowing that she couldn't have done any more or tried any harder. Not many of us can aspire to that.

Compartment syndrome is heavy duty sh=t
Easy to say
‘Compartment syndrome’
Very bad to experience
When blood supply is compromised, including valves, there’s more than just simple bone-repair going on.

She's hot, but reckless.
Way too old to be hooning icy trails at 100kph.
Muscles, power, strength, and balance are all decaying fast by the 40s.
Should have stayed retired.

@KSH,
I'm no expert, but I have had an external fixation for 3.5 months on my forearm due to broken radius and ulna, and a smashed scaphoid. these things are used to totally immobilise all the relevant joints and are quite common.
Not sure about the fasciotomy though.

@gixxerniknik, ouch. I hope you have a good/complete recovery.

Not an expert, my wife is... her take
Cross knee external fixation - her entire leg is immobile to prevent further damage. Critical to restore blood flow asap, hence the three multidisciplinary surgical procedures in a short period of time. These are all about managing the soft tissue damage, debridement and resolution of impaired blood supply to lower limb. There appears to be a fasciotomy with VAC concealed by the gown. Her foot looks normally perfused and a healthy colour which is a good sign.
Once the soft tissue, blood flow issues have resolved then her surgical team will perform further procedures to reduce the fracture and add internal fixation, possible bone grafts. Again this will likely be multiple procedures to achieve the best result.
Impossible to even hint at an outcome based on the limited knowledge of the case but she has a long recovery ahead of her.

I don't think we can look at whatever outcome she has from this accident (whatever that may be - I hope she has a full recovery) and use it to draw conclusions about what she should or shouldn't have done. Dangerous sports like ski racing, motor racing, free solo climbing, mountaineering, base jumping etc etc...there are plenty of examples of life altering and in some cases life ending consequences. But that is also true of driving on the motorway. Or even an accident at home which kills thousands of people in the UK every year. Life is risk, we just have to be happy with our own approach to it.

Lol.
She was out of the sport for halfadecade.
Her right knee was mashed.
Her left knee got mashed a couple weeks ago.
Her left ACL was mashed.
She had to wear a kneebrace to race.
She was old and in her 40s.
She mis-jumped and panicked.
Her leg is mashed.
Rumors now that her leg may get chopped off.
The decision to compete was beyond reckless.

@whitegold, She is indeed in her 40s, and is leading the world cup downhill rankings this season, based on this seasons performances.
Yes she blew her ACL a week before but was still one of the fastest in training and you won't find any of her peers disputing her right to be there.
She followed her career approach of taking the fastest racing line possible, and in her words misjudged it by 5 inches (at 60-70 mph) - unfortunately for her she caught the gate in the process & the rest is history.
Her decision to compete shows a bravery & commitment & willingness to do things the armchair critics could not even comprehend, and should be celebrated & commended IMHO.
