Yesterday's training run was cancelled due to heavy snow. Todaay's has been paused after 5 skiers due to fog (Vonn has number 10).
She has to complete at least one of the three training runs to be allowed to compete AIUI.

Well she got down. Was looking really good until the last sector where she slowed up by a second. She was actually ahead until then. Assuming everything is ok she's looking good to go.

Any ideas why she slowed up in the last section? Was she saving herself deliberately, or was she in pain, or what?

@KSH, don't pay it too much attention, she's regularly a way off in training
Edit: just watched it, she's barely trying the whole way down, and the fact that she was leading shows you how much everyone else was also trying. I caught a bit where Nina Ortleib was stood up tall from about halfway.
LV didn't look to be in any pain at all during her run.

Sometimes they slowup at the end, it's only a training run. But we'll have to wait for her instagram feed to know for sure.

Well that wasn't unexpected. I hope she hasn't suffered too much more damage.
Suspect a matching pair of knees will be on the horizon shortly.
Brave to compete , but ultimately unwise.

That is my view.
I was really hoping for the best (and that at least she'd get down safely - but holding back is not in her nature)....but a decision you might make in your 20s can be unwise in your 40s.

The actual crash had nothing to do with her knee. She hit a flag while airborne and landed sideways. Would have gone badly for anyone.
I feel very sorry for her.
The fact that the skis stayed didn't help!

That is a reasonable point - But I would argue: At her age, with a body that had been "Beaten up" over the years, a mindset that must have had concerns on some level and the potential for adding to the list of injuries (which will take longer to heal), was a risk too far.....especially as she has absolutely nothing to prove. IMV. Leave at the top of your game, rather than risk ending your career with a serious crash.

THB I only admire her more for taking the risk.
Shame about the outcome, and with no ACL there's a chance it may have done more damage that otherwise to meniscus and bone ends, possibly other ligaments as well. I doubt we'll see her competing again.

Leave at the top of her game? She was leading the FIS downhill standings by almost double the points of the next skier. She might well win even without skiing again.
People will queue up to say "I told you so" but she was a clear podium prospect right up to the crans Montana crash and then even arguably afterwards. Very small margins between triumph and disaster. But she left at the top of her game.

Yep, people said she wouldn't be back in the top flight after her comeback. They were wrong. She was doing well in the training runs, which might seem to support her decision, and that her accident today seems not to have been caused by her knee rather suggests she knew what she was doing.
| Chaletbeauroc wrote: |

IMV. A decision can be both Brave and (Very?) Risky.....Ultimately, the outcome will likely determine if it was Wise.
I look at this as a bloke in his mid 60s, who is now much more risk averse than I was in my early 40s....which absolutely taints my opinion. I know how decisions made in earlier life affect later life.

For me, that is the issue. She did have the crash, which threw a large spanner in the works.
I certainly don't blame her for deciding to compete....it's her indefatigable spirit. It's why she won so much.

Exactly, people talking such bobbins. She genuinely had a chance of a gold medal, even with the injury. To suggest she should have stood at the bottom cheering on her compatriots when she felt strong enough is nonsensical.

@Old Fartbag, she was fast in the training runs, at least until the very end when she (and most of the others) slowed down. The knee was ok, and it seems her head was as well*
She just tried to cut a corner too fine and hit a flag. If it had worked she would quite likely have won. Unfortunately it didn't.
It should be noted that she is not the only one who is / has done this with no ACL.
*If anyone who piles down an ice piste at 140km/h can be deemed to be ok in the head.

@Old Fartbag, true, but, as stated, it wasn't the ACL that broke her. It was an overly ambitious line that had a flag in the way. Nothing to do with age

The knee and accident hasn't had any impact on that crash today though. Sticking your right arm through a gate whilst in the air isn't going to end well for anyone.

That is indisputable.
At the starting gate, anything could happen...including a podium position. I take the view, all things considered, that the risk wasn't worth it. LV and her team took the opposite view....and might have been proven right.
It's just how I feel about it....and haven't changed my mind, like I might easily have, if she had succeeded.

Perhaps we can stop saying "it wasn't her ACL that caused the crash".
We all know that.
It was her choice to race, but I fear for her ability to walk after that crash, the replays were horrific.
