Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Chile - Snow Chain Rental

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We are traveling to Chile for skiing in August. It is approved by our rental company to use snow chains, but the company does not have them to rent. Where can we rent chains? How much does it cost? How do we pay - cash or card? We've heard that they require you to leave your driver's license with them as collateral, but we do not feel comfortable doing this as we need that as a form of identification. Any suggestions on an alternative to giving them your ID? Thanks!

Welcome to Snowheads, @vlhohol. Surely the answer, if it gets snowy, is to buy some snowchains? They're not particularly expensive compared to other aspects of skiing in Chile. I wouldn't want to leave drivers licence with them either. Most car rental places in Europe require infinite drawing on your credit card as collateral......

Well you could use:
https://www.xscape.cl/producto/cadenas-xscape-ski-rental/

That's about $25. I'm sure there are lots of tire places selling or renting stuff like that. I would check the actual regs though - internet people are unreliable on what you need for where, and car hire companies... well you need to talk to the people in Chile, not their follow-the-sun telephone folk who probably never saw snow.

As far as driving licenses are concerned.. well with UK ones you have to get some kind of weird number/ online thing anyway, technically, although no one outside the UK ever bothers with it for rentals. If the rental company forces you to leave a license with them, whatever internet people say isn't going to change that. I store copies if my ID docs in secure digital for anyway, but I've never been asked to show it aside from at the rental desk.

@vlhohol, cadenas de nieve

This is an issue that is easily sorted out in country, don't worry, but I wouldn't give them your ID as collateral. Offer a large deposit or go to another place.

Just look for signs saying 'Alquila cadenas de nieve' or such by the side of the roads going up to the mountains.

Chile is very much card payment, but of course keep some cash for just such transactions.

Enjoy Chile!
