Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Can I ptex over this?

 Poster: A snowHead

I'm inspecting my skis and I noticed two damages near the edge. A few questions:

1 Is this serious? I would normally not be too concerned but then you can sort of see the white stuff underneath? Is the white stuff the core? Is this what people call a core shot?
2 Is it fixable by ptex being so close to the edge? Or do I need to take it to a shop?

(Looks like my edge will need some touch up too but that's a different topic!)

Thanks!

There is a PTEX like strip called Metal Grip.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Doesn't look too bad. Clean off the damaged base material with a chisel or stanley blade and try ptex. If it holds great, if not you may need to patch (ski shop).
Kind of a "core shot" but not a very impressive one NehNeh

The link on that thread is no longer valid - been picked up by an ad-bot. I found the product at https://www.tognar.com/metalgrip-ski-base-repair-string-5/

Looks interesting - anyone had any recent success with it?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I have a few feet of Metal Grip which I've used, and take to the ski shop if they don't have it. Has worked fine.

Looks like the angle of attack may have pulled some stray scenery into the gap, are you sure that can't just be picked out ? To the OP.

It may just be holding the two component apart as it doesn't look significantly damaged to me.

@euanovsky, it looks like you have some grit in between the base and the edge, you would be seeing metal if it had gone through to the core, it's easy repairable, probably just some ptex, unless you have exposed metal then you would need a bit of metal grip and then put the ptex over it, you can buy tex candles and metal grip from the Piste Office.

use something thin to get the grit out, if you are in london check my signature Toofy Grin

Scrape out the crap, use edge grip not ptex and you'll be fine.

Thanks for all your advice. I cleaned it as best as I could and ptex-ed over it. Here's the result:
