Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Yeap, got to Sauze this afternoon and it's been snowing in town most of the day I reckon, and still snowing away quite merrily at 4pm, quite heavy at the moment. Snow lying all the way down to below Jouvenceaux.

Too late to get up the hill though Sad

Was a time so I’m told you could buy ski passes at the tourist office in Oulx, but no longer. We’ll try online instead. Otherwise up the hill in Sauze…shouldn’t be too much of a faff and I guess it won’t be too busy.

Yes, roads clear lots of fresh but tops still scoured and some lifts not open due to wind? Deffo powder to be found…Not bad at all in Sauze but connections closed to elsewhere. Hearing some blasting over towards san sicario side so that might open up some links later.
Anyway, sun is shining, but legs are burning already!!!

Via lattea website confirms closed Mt fraiteve links closed for the day due to wind.

Ventured to sannsicario and gondola down to sestriere. All good, a few icy patches where it’s been scoured. DS managed to ski to town (had to walk half hour to bottom Eh oh! ); would’ve been better to go down at the mid station. Connections eat up a bit of time so we’ll prob drive up to sestriere tomoz.

Heading out in 8 days time - on webcam watch too! Don't want to jinx it but hoping we have luck on our side and have timed it well.

Next week will be grand…got a wee dusting this morning which was nice. Temps should stay low and more coming in from sat I think. All connections open but return to Sauze is a sketchy traverse or a black. San Sicario is nice today though!

Excellent. We're staying is Sestriere, so if skiing Sauze we do the black early when its at its best and then head back to SanSicario after lunch before that 2 man gets manic busy and spend the pm in SS before skiing back to Sest down the home run. Sometimes hop on the Gondola at the half way point if the bottom half is cut up and busy.

As of 3pm Monday there's just been a bit of a freshener, couple cm at most but every little helps. The links are closed for wind so don't know how much has fallen at the very top. Pistes are skiing well, few thin parts with pebbles but nothing critical. Feeling cold. Not sure if cannons are running in all places at the mo or just on the home runs, it's definitely cold enough.

Mainly light flurries from what i saw dipping in and out, but when I post last message it was absolutely tanking down at the high points, bit thick flakes at a rate on knots. Didn't see any cannons going apart from in Sestriere beginner area, but then there are only 6 cams to look at.

I know no one has a crystal ball but I'm after your opinion on what you'd do...

We have 2 apartments booked for a week 25th Feb. One in Sauze, one in Cervinia. I have to cancel the Sauze one by the 25th Jan if we don't want it.

So... Sauze or Cervinia?!

(Reading the above it seems we will have a good time in Sauze with current conditions? And just hope that we get more in Feb... We love Sauze, have not been to Cervinia.
We're 4 intermediate snowboarders)

Cheers!

Snowing with intent this morning in Sauze town. If it can keep this up all day then it will be a decent dump. Didn't get more than a cm or two freshener yesterday but this one could make a difference, if it keeps going.

@gysmyth both have risks...Sauze for cover, Cervinia for wind. It can get so hellishly windy in Cervinia and I wouldn't go in January if I just had a week, late Feb probably safer... I'd wait and see what today's snow brings for the via lattea. And have a look on the weather thread to see what long range temperatures might trend towards...

Awesome, cam check shows its neve-ing in volume all over. It was always forecast to be the heaviest snow today, and may get a bit more top up tomorrow. Can wait til Thursday, think we've timed our visit very fortunately.

Also with a prolonged spell of very cold weather ahead, the cannons will be running to top up /maintain what falls in this current spell.

@gsmyth555, Geographically they aren't that far apart to have significantly different weather between now and then plus its 5 weeks away, an age in weather terms and slap bang in the middle of the season. Both have access to sizeable and varied terrain, both high and lower tree-lined runs.. Make a choice based on whether you want familiarity or a new area.

there appears to be half the Italian Army there this morning, or a stag party in full camo?
They aren't very good skiers though - all on the magic carpets....

@belette, didnt appear to snow as much as forecast yesterday, although there was clearly a reasonable covering. Snow cannon are belting it out though

We went over to Claviere and Montgenevre today, snow is great over there, must have got 20cm of fresh where we only got 10cm at a push in Sauze. Cannons running now on the home runs to Sauze. Everything skiing nicely, still a few thin patches but nothing critical.

Arrived at Sestriere at lunchtime today so had a good afternoon skiing. Damn cold - 16°c, but conditions good, very little icy stuff at all, and evident that they'd had a bit of snow over last few days. Depth wise, there is enough, but it's clear its not big depths, but pistes are fine. Snow cannons blasting away all day.

Will prob head over to Sauze and San Sicario tmr.

Similar v cold and sunny today.
The piste conditions in San Sicario were awesome, Sauze was decent but a bit scraped with the odd ice patch. As expected very sparsely populated in the slopes, so all in all an awesome day's skiing.

Forecasting slightly less wind tmr so should feel a tad warmer, though I still reckon its a other 5 layer day.

My group of 4 will be arriving to Sauze on the 28th. Current weather report doesn't look too promising. Seems like the snow might melt away.

What's the best way to get to the other stations if we are looking for nicer snow. Is there a reliable bus system or how much would a taxi cost for 4 people to to drive to the other stations esp Clavier?

Also where's the best place to do wine tasting?

Melt? It's - 15°c at the moment.

Best way between areas is skis and chair lifts.

At the moment the snow's going nowhere as it's absolutely Baltic. The base on pistes is not massive but is in really good cold condition and they are running cannons. Definitely no need for taxis or anything at the moment. Even when freeze/thaw cycle resumes it will probably hold up well unless temperatures get unusually warm. There is some ice/hardpack on higher traffic pistes.

Over on the French side the top of Montgenevre by Tetras was wind affected yesterday and is a bit scoured/hardpack now. Over the other size is still nice and soft in most places.

we were there Thursday to Sunday. The conditions were great and didn't deteriorate at all thru the weekend. We skied Sestriere, Sansicario and Sauze. Didnt fancy the 3 chair upload to the otherside in -15*C! The piste were arguably the best in SanS. Sauze was slightly busier and had one or two slightly dodgy patches develop, but still in good nick.

and it has started snowing lightly this morning and looks to be getting heavier, good news for anyone heading out there soon.
