Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Airport Security Queues

I'm flying out from Birmingham airport this morning to Munich. After joining the queue for security it took 45 minutes to reach the security check. Just a heads up to allow plenty of time (unless you want to pay extra to join the express lane, in this case it could have been worth it).If it's like this early December I expect the queues over the Christmas/New Year period could be significantly longer... Sad

I really object to needing to pay for express as the normal service is just so poorly staffed /resourced for the well forecast ad expected demand.

I saw this at Belfast Intl once when the queues were out the door only half their scanners were running, their express lane was fully staffed but virtually idle. And they became well know for this so I avoid that airport like the plague.

Its like the airports want to make you to pay, funny that.

With kids - I will pay it. Anything for an easier trip. Of 32 flights this year the longest I have queued was about 20mins at Gatwick but I’ve just paid out for Luton fastrack on 30/12 as its £6 each and I wouldnt be devastated to lose that if there were no queues.

Iv'e flown out of Birmingham quite a bit this year and from May onwards the secrutity queues have been about 10 minutes - a massive improvement on last year.

Like @ster, I don't pay the queue jumping bribe out of principal. It just makes things worse. (A bit like paying ransom money for kidnapping)

At Dublin Airport, there was a 40 minute queue to get through security (4.30 am on a Friday). This was a couple of weeks back. It was the busiest I've seen it - but I didn't travel during the really chaotic period.

@Layne, I also flew out in August. It was under 30 minutes from arriving at the car park to being airside. It all went well until Lufthansa delayed their flight and we missed the connection to Venice. We ended up in Venice 5 hours late. We are still trying to get our compensation from Lufthansa. It's the last time I'll use that airline. Actually I said that last time I used them when they took 3 days to deliver our luggage. Never again.

I flew out of Stansted last Thursday afternoon (Ryanair). I`d paid the basic fast track £7 each and we walked straight through. The queues elsewhere looked pretty bad.

Flew back from Hamburg Monday evening, where I never feel the need to book fast track, we hardly had to wait at all. However I got pulled for a jar of honey in my bag (it was set honey so I`d hoped it would be fine). Fortunately the nice security lady let me past with it along with a warning not to take honey again in hand luggage.

Getting back into the UK at Stansted was fine, no queues, but then our plane was very late and I think the last to land that night. The landing itself was a little scary, aborted a couple of times, apparently 'fully automated' due to the fog. The cabin crew made us turn everything completely off and pack everything away. They checked that everything was tucked under seats etc and that all lights were out, and when we did finally come down it was with quite a bump throwing us forwards in the seat and making me glad nothing was loose to fly around the cabin.

If you book lounge access, then express queue is a no brainer.

One amusing thing this morning at Birmingham airport, l noticed that just before the security check where people had left liquids etc that weren't allowed there was a huge full jar of Marmite! Laughing

We’ve experienced similar a couple of times, I find it reassuring that when needed they do exactly what’s needed.
