Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Christmas in Mayrhofen or St Anton?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi there, a group of 8 of us are looking to travel to either Mayrhofen or St Anton for Christmas (Aged between 25 and 65). We are mostly first time skiers and looking at booking through Crystal Ski. Considering Manni Hotel or Obermair in Mayrhofen (big difference in price for both of these) or Goldens Kruez in St Anton. Looking for a lively resort thats typically Austrian and Christmassy with decent restaurants and nightlife. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

For 1st time skiers both Mayrhofen and St Anton are pretty poor places to learn. Too big, too disjointed, skiing too difficult etc.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Oh really? My reason for picking these two resorts is because we’re restricted with flights and need to get back into Dublin early on 30th. If we had no restrictions where would you recommend? Thanks.

There’s better resorts in Austria for beginners, which can be equally easily accessed from the same flights as would serve St Anton or Mayrhofen.

Alpbach, Skiwelt, Saalbach - would be surprised if Crystal don’t have accomm in there. Also Obergurgl (tho personally not sure I’d go there at Xmas), Kitzbuhel.

Thank you. The flights for Saalbach are into Salzburg so not back early enough. There is an option for Alpbach (Hotel Alphof which seems to be on a steep hill) so would love to know if anyone has stayed there and what it’s like? Have read some mixed reviews. Also is Alpbach a good sized town? Thanks.

@afinlay, actually, St.Anton is fine for first timers. It has very nice beginners-slopes.
it is true that the larger ski-area is more suited for good skiers, but that is not a problem at all for beginners, who stay on the beginner-slopes most of the week anyway.
St.Anton is not a cheap place though. Big advantage over Mayrhofen is St.Anton's altitude (1300 m), which gives much more likeliness of -natural- snow, than Mayrhofen's 600 m...Which especially at Christmas can be a thing.... Very Happy
St.Anton is a large and very lively town, very Austrian, but with a very international clientele.
