Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zermatt is in theory still open - and was earlier this week. However it was closed today because of the poor condition of the snow. God only knows how they will get through to October.

Given how little snow Saas-Fee had last season, and how much summer business training camps generate, I’m not surprised access is restricted.

I only summer skied once at Saas-Fee about 30 years ago, and back then you could ski from the top lifts down to below the Felskinn top station, and they had a button lift to take you up to the lower tunnel exit from the Metro. Prior to the Metro being built in the late 80’s, the summer ski area was based around Felskinn Shocked

These days the summer snow line is kilometres further up the mountain, and they are fighting glacier retreat to keep the pistes between the top and mid stations open.

@mountainaddict, but on the flip side, it’s an awesome mountain biking season in the Alps this year.

Given the crazy temperatures forecast next weekend it seems unlikely there will be glacier skiing anywhere. Is the Saas Fee metro still open for access to the Allalinhorn etc? After recent events on the Marmaloda not sure I would fancy going up the "normal" track to the Feejoch, there is a big lump of ice above just under the summit.

In normal years, the glacier looks like the pic above by the end of August - not mid July. Prior to then, it's usually all nice and white and snow covered, with decent conditions (for summer) in June and most of July.

Depends what you call "normal". 25 years ago the glacier was open all year round and had snow cover all year round.

Both Tignes and Les 2 Alpes have closed early. I've been looking at the webcams for Zermatt (consider a trip in September) and it looks dire...

You could summer ski here until around 2004/5 (there is a trip report by PG on the forum here: https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=1891 )

@iainm, i'm due in to ski (from Cervinia) in August.

There's a post in the Zermatt thread from someone that's just been there that said the piste condition is as good as it has been the last couple of summers.

While the trend is undeniable I'm not sure that a simple comparison of photos is necessarily that probative in so far as it may be contingent on how much snow fell the season before etc

@8611, That is very true. The real question is how much earlier is this happening because of man made climate change.

About 25 to 30k years ago, the glaciers around the Tarentaise reached Lyon or thereabouts.

and when William invaded England in 1066 the alps were largely glacier free.

I’ve posted this before, but here it is again. It’s not the change in temperature that is the issue, after all we are technically coming out of an ice age, it’s the speed of the change. If you can’t be bothered to scan it all, just skip to the bottom…….

Fair point Davidof. I was referring to my experience of Tignes in July since about 2007. IIRC, the current position is unprecedented in that time.

Was at the rail station in Morteratsch two years ago (part of a MTB transalp). They have a path that leads from the station up to the glacier, with signs that mark the end of the glacier over the years. Back when the station was built in 18xx the glacier effectively came as far as the station. Now it's nearly 3Km up the valley. I have done the ski run from Diavolezza down the glacier to the Morteratsch station about 30 years ago. Not sure if that's even possible anymore.

Looks like Hintertux is the only place still going. Website says they have 7 lifts open, with 25cm of snow. Find that hard to believe, guess it depends on how you define 'snow'. Last snowfall was so long ago the website has forgotten when it was...

Because so much of Saas-Fee skiing is/was on glacier it has been hit harder than many resorts. The main Fee glacier tongue has receeded by kilometres and what remains has thined dramatically.

The main glacier reached most of the way to the village in the 80's, and is now barely visible from the village. Everything and more in the first photograph has melted Sad :

Glacier, what glacier. This was from 5 years ago, so the situation will be much worse by now.

The former Langfluh glacier pistes accessed from the lift in the top left below, have melted away to leave a deep rocky gorge.

last time I was in SF it was like your middle picture, around 1997 I think. It was October and open and the director of the ski lifts invited me skiing but I was on business and didn't have time. I clearly missed an opportunity.
