Glad you’re enjoying the skating, I can never figure out why more people don’t pick it up (especially freeskiers in the off season) as the movements are so similar to skiing!

Plus you can:
Improve strength for core and legs as well as balence and coordination.
Meet strange and interesting people.
Visit strange and interesting places.
Look a bit of a lady's front bottom sometimes

Used to compete both domestically and internationally at speed skating. I actually won one of the first uk senior men's races where inline skates were allowed.
Then found women and beer.... Like skiing, been going downhill ever since.

Funny to come across this thread, really helpful as I'm just about to buy a pair of second hand inline skates. I've been invited to a roller disco and it's been many years since I've been on skates (or even to a disco for that matter) although I was a bit of an ice skater a long time ago. I'm far too chicken to skateboard because I don't want to break anything so I'm hoping that rollerblades will be a bit like skiing. If I manage not to have a nasty accident, (unused skateboard guards at the ready) I'm hoping it will help with pre season ski fitness too.

@Dubmuffin, Don't go anywhere near a skatepark until you are really confident on your skates! I went way too early and it cost me a new helmet (the second one this year  )
A full set of pads is also essential, including wrist guards, until you are really confident.
The body movements and actions for inline skating are most like skiing, you have "edges" to think about and the technique seems to transfer well. Quads are slightly different in the way they steer, but are better for disco moves. I think this is to do with speed, disco people don't break much sweat.

It's still the best thing I've done this year, all the thrills, speed and danger of off piste skiing without leaving your local park!

@Seahoob Thanks for the tips and links. Skates bought, pads adorned - who knew how sweaty your knees can get? Have already made use of the wrist guards, got to say, stopping has proved harder than I thought! However, already loving the feeling, very much a cautious beginner, but I can feel the similarities to skiing and ice skating - all about the muscle memory. The skates are really accentuating my A frame technique despite using my ski boots insoles - need a bit of help there.
@admin, Have a friend who did Roller-Derby - pretty much broke her

Tell me about it! It's critical to implement a rigorous airing regimen. Leave a pair of sweaty elbow pads in a closed bag for a day or two and you'll get enough ammonium to set off airport security alerts!

Like with skiing, the talk is of getting your feet hip-width apart, but that's not the key. The key is to get your knees hip-width apart. Do a quick butt-clench => see how it shifts your femurs, putting more space between your knees - from there, you can have your feet directly beneath your knees, without the a-frame

@Dubmuffin, Great that you have got your kit, now just skate steadily and build up your experience slowly. I've had a couple of injuries and they really set you back, so take it easy.
Look out for good, smooth, flat areas with no hazards, if you can find one that is covered over they are great for when it rains. Wet surfaces can be deadly, also look out for leaves and wind blown twigs.
I have started doing a bit at the ice rink which is always flat and sheltered, but costs.
I may dabble with the indoor skatepark, but still a little weary, and it's not too long to wait for the Pre season bash

@Seahoob, You'll be pleased to hear the roller disco went well, my limited outdoor practice in the local tennis court served me well and it was so much easier inside, shame there is nowhere I can do it locally as it has rained ever since. Let's hope that little bit of skating has a greater positive effect on my skiing.

@Dubmuffin, Brilliant! Disco rules. Had a good roller disco session at the We Out Here festival this summer, and want some more.
Its been lousy and wet in Manchester for weeks, so i've been ice skating which is great but different in many ways.
The music at the ice rink sucks massively and they started playing Christmas songs two weeks ago

Got my inline skates out yesterday as there is no snow around... and promptly got attacked by a huge dog with a massive head. Luckily he went for my hands and got a wrist guard in the face, which he didn't like and went off wimpering to "mummy" who claimed he was really very friendly. Dags, hate 'em.
I will have to look at getting new rubber as the wheels are worn and don't ride that well.

Wrist guards and knee pads. ffs. Never wore them in all my years of skating either recreationally or as competing.
Wheels aren't made from rubber, happy to discuss sheer hardness ratings as that is more important to consider in terms of the surface you are on and the speed/distance you are attempting.
I've done marathon distance skating (both quad and inline) and competed at international level so do actually know more about this than actual skiing to be honest.

Hey guys. I’m late to the party. I am a Ski instructor and do Rollerblading and Quad skating. Although both have taken a backseat compared to skateboarding with @admin.
I like Quads for the steering. But overall I prefer Rollerblades because if the speed and carving.

Impressive single leg work there!
I thought I'd written a long post on here about a month ago about how my skate practice was coming on and asking for tips, but apparently not - must have forgotten to click send 
I've progressed from the tennis court (as Wimbledon brought out the locals), to the tiny skate park along side the ramps, to the local car park in the evening, as no one wants to pay £1.50 to park there since it stopped being free after 6pm. I even managed to do a short stint down the high street where the pavement is wide with a slight incline to practice turns on a hill. And now it's dark in the evenings and nearly winter again...progress feels slow!

@Dubmuffin, Tennis courts are great, ours was resurfaced recently and was left without nets for ages so it was great for skating on. I've also done a few park sessions after mastering backwards technique. I invested in a couple of lessons at the swanky indoor park in Salford, where a tatooed woman half my age said I had the essential elements for park skating, which I was quite proud of. So consequently I'm at the bottom of a long steep learning curve if I want to progress, never mind the ski season starts soon.

Are we allowed to revive this thread now it's Spring? With the weather being slightly warmer/drier, a lull at work, and the realisation that I might not ski again until December (sorry no EoSB this year), I thought it was time to get the skates out again and have no one else to share this news with.
A couple of sessions around the tennis court have got me back to about where I was last year, but today I had a breakthrough, I did a 180 turn. This skill has so far eluded me as I was sure my legs would end up going in different directions, or I'd fall sideways and do untold damage, but I did a couple of on the spot tests hanging on to the fence, then along the thin but smooth path, I did one, almost without thinking - it was slow and slightly uphill but I think I got it. Will this be the year I finally learn how to skate properly and can venture further than the local park?
