Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Snow in Fugen still very good! We had love the runs down past Holzalm (hutte has has a makeover I think). We always stop at the Wedelhutte for lunch, very good. But the rudest staff on the mountain (maybe the whole Zillertal), every year we laugh at how grumpy they are! Great food though.

@SaraJ, we always pass instructors and wonder if it could be you hahaha!

Zell today, conditions fantastic early on lower down and higher up in the afternoon. Undecided about tomorrow, will check out the webcams first thing and decide.

Another fantastic day on the Penken & Rastogel. We've found the trick is to not get there too early and let it get churned up a little, then it's great. Sunnier today than expected for most of the day. Weather to change from tomorrow.

Could anyone with experience on Hintertux advise if tomorrow's conditions would be ok in the morning and early afternoon? Essentially looking to avoid icy conditions as they really make me lose my nerve.

I can't seem to post a photo of the forecast but snow-forecast is saying Hintertux at 2375m in the morning will be: cloudy, max temp of -3, wind 10 km/h. In the afternoon light snow, max temp -2, 5km/hr. Having spent half my life on the Penken I've never made it to the glacier yet, a sin!

@random_banter, it’s going to be windy and for me that would probably put me off. If the cloud is high enough and visibility is ok then the snow etc would be fine but low cloud and wind won’t be much fun. You could check out the conditions in the morning and then make a decision.

Others here may have a different view.

10km/h is hardly gale force, so the wind shouldn't be a problem - it's 6 miles per hour, or 3 metres per second, so it's a breeze rather than a strong wind. If you had that on Penken you'd think it a good day.

The cloud on the other hand could make visibility poor in the morning, and on a fairly featureless glacial terrain that's not ideal. I'd suggest starting somewhere else and relocating to the glacier late in the morning as the cloud lifts

@ousekjarr, Bergex was showing 20-40 but probably right. I have been up there in very strong wind…with ice and low cloud not too nice.

Anyway how was it @random_banter, ?

We did Hintertux in the morning, a bit icy up top but ended up doing 3 circuits of the home run before lunch and heading back to the bus drop off at the Hexenkessle and sessioned finkenberg and Penken in the afternoon. Wind was a non issue.

After all the planning we seem to have been hit with a wave of tiredness, so have been taking it easy.

The good news is, the snow is well and truly falling now. Visibility is really poor though on parts of the mountain.

We decided to ski the tree line runs at Zell today but it’s a bit low and is alternating between snow and rain. Heavy snow up top but no visibility. Kids are pestering to hit the Fugen pools instead. Might be a plan.

Snow line should be lower tomorrow.

We'll be skiing in the Zillertal (based in Fügen) from 7-12 April. We've skied there for a number of odd days over the years but I can't say I know the ski areas well.

As it's looking a bit snowy for at least a few days of the trip (with freezing level around 600-1000m), can anyone advise on which areas are best for tree runs?

@mountainaddict, Zell below Rosenalm and around Kreuzwiesenslave

Eggalm at Mayrhofen as well as the bowl around the boardpark including Larchwald. Moslbahn black is always lovely in bad weather. Good offpiste there too if the snow gods allow.

Does anyone know if there will be any supermarkets open in Zillertal this Sunday ? I know some were open on Sundays earlier in the season, but I don't know if they'll still be open on Sundays in April. I'm likely to be getting to Zell am Ziller between 17:00 and 18:00

@viv, After a quick Google for the supermarkets that have been open on Sundays this winter it looks like some aren't opening at all and the others are closing earlier than they normally do when they're open on Sunday (5 or 6, instead of 7).
There's a Shell garage in Ramsau that has a mini Billa, so you might find what you need there Puzzled

@SaraJ Great, thanks. I'm not actually sure what I'll need yet. I'm picking up a bag tomorrow that I left earlier in the season, and I know it contains some dried food. However, I can't remember what, though I doubt it'd be sufficient for a conventional meal

I recommended Kaltenbach to my Sister in law and teenage niece for a 3 night March stay. They normally go to France, so I’ve been on a mission to persuade her to try Austria.
She then changed the date and is heading over next Wednesday. I’m not sure I would have recommended it for an April trip but it seems like they may have got lucky with the recent snow fall?
Can anyone recommend areas and runs in best current condition please (both decent piste skiers)? And any good lunch stops would also be much appreciated.
They are staying in hotel Post, so should be well looked after in the evening.
Many thanks

Penken today is in incredible condition for April - 10cm of fresh overnight, grippy conditions and -8 this morning. Snowing gently from about 9:30, so limited contrast but still bright.

It's not that uncommon for this time of the year. We have had powder days in April here more than half the times in the last 20 years.

@ousekjarr, I was offpiste both at Eggalm and around the Larchwald, it was more than 10cm. Maybe 30+ Overnight. Knee deep in places. The reported numbers don’t seem correct. Maybe most of it fell yesterday. Anyway super fresh tracks in the trees. Very Happy

@Matrix, I wish I was still out there, I only got a small bit of o/p done on Friday but it was tricky in the poor visibility. I dropped down under the lift at the top of the Nordhangbahn a couple of times (valley of doom) but wasn't confident to do the valley of death with the poor vis.

Sad we were of home on Saturday but great for anyone still there. Very Happy

Answering my own question earlier re supermarkets on a Sunday, yesterday the 2nd Spar along the valley (fairly sure it's in Fugen) was open till 18:00, and the Hofer (between the 2 Spars) still had a sign saying it was open till 17:00

Had really good conditions today in Mayrhofen. There's a fair bit (20cm average) of powder off the side of the pistes (our first time in Mayrhofen, so didn't stray too far), and the snow facing away from the sun is still mostly untransformed, though that may not last as the temperature rises. Best bits were in Rastkogel, and on the shady side from Penken into the Horbergtal

Great conditions on the Hintertux glacier today, -16 on top and -8 at the Tuxerfernerhaus. Crisp and grippy everywhere, and a lot of people with airbags and fat skis on the lifts.

No queues anywhere, gondolas half full most of the time, and while the main centres were busy the pistes seemed pretty empty.

Back to Ahorn and Penken tomorrow while the weather is good.

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
Two runs of the Ahorn started the day well for us, with great conditions almost all the way down. The last 300m is somewhat limited...

The main bowl at Penken is holding up fairly well despite the 9C temperature late today. Up on Rastkogel it was significantly lower, and much better as a result. We took the run down to Eggalm which was OK, but the piste into town to get back up Rastkogelbahn has suffered severely with lots of bare patches and sugar at the bottom.

Snowbombing is underway, and has been mildly entertaining as the participants are not typical skiers or boarders in the main, so it has been fun listening to some of the conversations as large groups of lads and small groups of girls stalk the mountain in search of "sick beats bro". They might be the next generation which will sustain skiing for another 30 years, which would certainly be different...

One group of 8 lads today had 7 pairs of gloves between them - one didn't think he'd need any in April. Another was being reassured that his one hour boarding lesson at MK was enough to be OK anywhere in Mayrhofen. He didn't look convinced, and unfortunately we couldn't stick around to watch the inevitable result rolling eyes

On the plus side, a major party at the Grillhofalm kept about 300 people off the lifts for the afternoon, leaving the slopes pretty empty if a little audibly challenged. Admin would have loved it Happy

It looks like the conditions are great this week. That snowfall really helped. When we left last Saturday we were off the back of the worst Vis (Friday).

We have Covid now. Putting it down to one fun evening in the ice bar!

We're definitely converted to Spring Skiing!
