Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Light wind keeps flattening the batteries at YM. Probably just about skiable today. Could be good again by mid week......in theory.

Covid numbers now below 300 per 100,000 across most of Cumbria, Durham, north York’s and Northumberland.

The outlook is cold.

But still looking like no realistic prospect of restrictions being relaxed enough to allow snowsports (or much else) before March...It increasingly looks like curtains for this winter for England (& Scotland) Confused

Looks like quite a decent fall of snow on Tuesday then cold for a while. The ground should readily freeze at all levels.

Lots of interest this year in the English real snow ski clubs. Shame we’re not able to actually ski Sad

The ground up on the North Pennine moors is already well frozen, I can vouch for that! Even down at 200m; full ice higher up. Even usual squelchy mossy bog supports weight (most times rolling eyes ).

Yad might be less glamorous: but we're much less of a walk in Cool (Can't read the FT link, firewalled.)

If you put ‘ ft skiing raise’ into google you may be able to read it.

Looks like a decent fall of snow tomorrow, at least on the fells, and then perhaps the coldest temperatures of winter after that. snowHead

@Peter S, it's looking a bit dream winter. Heavy snow falls on the fells but clearer low down for access. Weardale cams already looking good.

Yes easterlies all the way and still fairly early in the season. This could be a year where Cross Fell holds the last snow in England rather than Brown Cove. The Kirkland Gulley and some of the higher west facing areas could do well. The summit of Cross fell must be totally saturated with snow by now?

On one of the 'Ski Sunday' progs 'Weardale Ski Club' was featured. The next Ski Sunday prog featured a very talented 14 year old British Snowboarder by the name of 'Mia Brookes'.

Let's just go back 11 years to a Blue Bird February day in 2010 at Weardale Ski Club and there, on a Mini-Snowboard (that used to be a Skateboard) was a Cute little 3 year old girl also called 'Mia' who was wearing a set of Long-ish Safety Reins held by her Mum). She was having a great time showing all of us Oldies how Snowboarding should be done.

Could these two Snowboarders, called Mia, be One and the Same person?

Highly probable I would think, as on the Ski Sunday item Mia said she had just turned 14 and it would have been filmed some months ago, possibly the end of last season.

Weardale and Yad Moss looking pretty good. I’d imagine the road will be covered by now ? Good potential for North Sea streamers next week. Could be lots of weather warnings next week depending how the pressure systems set up.
The fences may start to disappear by the weekend. Sad

There's a lass who posts photos of road conditions near Yad (Alston side usually, or around Ashgill) on Facebook local roads sites - definitely been a good lot down for a good many days, reports tonight of several foot drifts on it (I suspect Co. Dm side) and it is actually closed tonight from Alston.

Pretty constant snow a bit further down for the last few days, good depth though very wet and slushy, sometimes nice and fluffy, sometimes more sleet. Bet that it's fun further up though. Not been the weather for outdoor explorations, but will go and check as soon as it is.
Yes, Cross Fell looks fantastic. Can just walk it (though very long) with a probably-justifiably 'short local' drive from mine: most tempting on the next clear day.

From the weekend onwards we should start to see the movement of a lot of snow off the plateau down onto the slopes at YM but also the road below and down into the South Tyne valley. Perhaps the next ‘Beast from the East’ though the wind may not be as fierce this time depending on the pressure gradient. Potential for the high roads to be closed for days.

Weardale webcams looking good this morning - appears to have been sheltered enough for it not to have blown too much. There does appear to have been a lot of drifting at Yad. Those new roadside stock fences seem to be causing the road to block in more readily.

Looking at the weather this morning the next front is going to come through wet nearly to all but the highest tops. Depending on the rain:snow mix it's going to be a settle or strip knife edge.

Yes Hartside is currently reading plus 0.3c. It’s 30m lower than the ticket office at YM so I’d say the air temp is around freezing though possibly just above because of the saturated air. It’s forecast to get to about 1c at the summit for a while. It turns cooler again in just over 24 hrs so I don’t think we will lose much. And then it should snow and blow from the east for 5 days snowHead

How hill is showing a big amount of snow loss but Yadcams look like it's just the cosmetic that's gone. Weardale is looking better but the high temperatures and damp air across the Pennines has settled the snow. Over all a good base to go into the next cycle of snow.

Temperature dropping now. Rain turning to snow at Weardale and Yad Moss. Currently minus 1c on Great Dun Fell and 45mph easterly. Must be a lot of snow up there.

This is worth a watch. A stellar uk mountain forecast for this week from MWIS. Best synoptics since the Beat from the East. Cool Cool

I think it's likely to be snow at the summit but sleet at the bottom. Howhill is still over 4c and Hartside fairing better at 0.7c. Over at Weardale the club weather station is 0.9c, Forest in Teesdale is 2.3c and Lanehead is 1.5c. Unfortunately this weekend's falls aren't looking as good as first predicted.

Snow level just starting to drop now. You can see snow falling at Weardale and the ground is turning whiter at Yad Moss. The east north easterly direction should be good there moving snow down from the plateau and across the fences. The ground is cold and will very quickly freeze up. Should be some accumulation as the temperature plunges tomorrow.

Not much snow falling today in the Pennines but the strong easterly wind is gradually filling in more of the runs and creeping up the fences at Yad Moss. It’s minus 4 at the ticket office and the humidity is below 60% helping the ground to freeze hard and allowing the snow to drift. The road must have been accessible from the north as there were a few, presumably local, skiers walking up this afternoon. The road is probably blocked by now or at least difficult over the top in the 50mph gusts.

Hopefully catch some North Sea Streamers soon.

Lovely fluffy sparkly stuff down at 200m. Winter wonderland, dry cold not the slushy wet and graupel of the last several days. Not too cold till the wind gets up, well above freezing today. Had a fair good fall (6+ inches?) overnight and still showers in between sun.
Yad road definitely closed on the Cumbria side again this morning, lots of cars stuck overnight & early hours, difficult roads generally around Alston Moor, Nent, Hartside, etc. In other words, fantastic conditions.

I was a bit surprised about the number of 'locals' that appear to have got caught out.

Yad and Weardale looking good. I thought it looked like Weardale had been pisted up yesterday (explains the cameras going off). Yad could probably do with the same - give the machine a run out and compact things down a bit.

It's amazing, that snow, Peter. Lots of other shots of the roads on the AM and Teesdale roads FB pages too - Yad area looks, um, yeah... rolling eyes

b]@oldagedpredator[/b] - think that most are local or passing through with reasonable justification. Roads are pretty bad, and covering quickly. Loads of HGVs stuck too, one right at the top of my road just now: and that road's not bad at all. Lots of folks go to Middleton & back on the Yad road, too. Not necessarily being kept as clear as one might hope, maybe? Fair few are getting stuck late or early doors as I'm reading it.
Mind, 3 years ago, they all needed rescuing by helicopter, didn't they? Laughing

It’s probably a little deceptive at Yad Moss. I imagine the snow cover is still a long way off previous long fetch easterlies, at the moment. The powder snow has a lot of air in it and drifts very easily. It would disappear very quickly in a thaw. Still as OAP points out the light snow and frozen grass would make for excellent skiing, I’m afraid.

Looks like the cold air gets cut off at the weekend and temps return to normal. Some very cold air before then however. The Meto weather app has minus 10c for the summit of Yad Moss (Burnhope Seat) on Saturday morning. That would be quite chilly.

A few more showers passing through today and a few more snowboarders walking up. I’m guessing some of the fences near the top will be buried by now Puzzled

I think the top will have banked out. Latest pictures looked good with Yad appearing to pick up more drifting than Weardale but I think the gullies of F2 will have filled in nicely.
