Hello all,
We are a group of 4 heading to St Anton on 21-28 January. We'd like to get a couple of days guiding and/or tuition - all of us have skied off-piste before but I think most of us would still call ourselves beginners. Does anyone have any recommendations? We have enough people that we could hire an individual guide, rather than joining a larger group.
Cheers,
David

We were a group of 3 who used Wolfgang. He is private guide but affiliated with the company based in the glass hut at the bottom of the main lift. He got us all transceivers and back pack with probes etc. Great guy. Assessed our abilities( all boarders) then took us on an hour hike and found untouched powder. One of the best days I have ever had on snow. Great guy who came out for a serious apres session afterwards. 00436503311136
We are out again in a few weeks and have already booked a day with him. Enjoy and stay safe

I like Franz Trimmel; good sport, shares knowledge, skis superbly.
We also used Pio Jutz, serious chap, might be a bit too tough for a group of offpiste beginners though.
Hubi Klimmer (Hubertus Klimmer) is a top-level local instructor (not a guide but he'll take you wherever you can go) who can be a good laugh if you gel with his sense of humour:
- sudden fog descends: "and now we see with our knees"
- getting into a forest: "bend ze knees, avoid ze trees"
-on 1 January, taking out his thermos: "usually I drink tea with rum, today is only tea". Me, thinking about some drastic* New Year resolutions: "What happened, Hubi"? ... "I ran out of rum!"
(*if you meet Hubi you will understand why that would be drastic).

I'm sure Franz is great, judging by his facebook posts, however can't recommend him as a few years ago my wife booked us both Heli-skiing with him as a Xmas present and as the date approached it was clear there was no off piste to be had (everywhere was completely brown or rock other than the cannoned pistes) he called the day before to say the Heli was off (we already figured that out) but he wouldn't refund the deposit, told us we had to go off-piste with him (see above - there was ZERO off piste) instead (and pay the dif. between deposit and guiding cost) so yeah, the guy still has our deposit...

This is past your trip, but for future reference, Whiteguides are excellent. Manfred G - mountain goat or Andreas S - ex FIS racer were great, guides and people, different personas and pleasure to be guided by; or local Arlberg legend Franz S - older but knows snow likely as well as or better than anyone in the Arlberg.

From Hubi, there was also: "Look at those guys schnitzeling over there."
