Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Chris_n, any input from you on this development - my OH was idly looking at webcams this morning and saw that there is a new magic carpet at the top of the gondola in Niederau. It seems to have sprung up quickly. Opens up that area for a bit of nursery slope teaching when the snow is poor at the base - and sunnier.

Just checked now and the camera swings to the left as it did and yes. new covered magic carpet!! Help those coming from the cafe/hotel maybe?

For those familiar with the area, what are the snow conditions typically like in early-mid March in Niederau? I'm toying with the idea of a week there from March 8, but have never been there before and don't know whether that might perhaps be a little too late? FWIW, I'm happy enough skiing slushy conditions, but I'd prefer not to be somewhere where a lot of the slopes are just narrow white strips on the grass (something I experienced in the SkiWelt some years ago in March).

Conditions are likely to be very similar to SkiWelt given it is only 7 km away, how it will be in March this year is impossible to say this far out. Due to the North facing aspect and the fact that all of the downhill runs are through the trees you wouldn't have the same feeling that you get in some areas of SkiWelt.

Thanks. Yes, I wasn't imagining the climate was going to be different from the SkiWelt, but I didn't know about the aspect, and that's helpful. Of course, no-one can predict what it's going to be like in March this year, and that's why I asked was the conditions were typically like. If it's OK most years, then there's a decent chance it will be this year, too.

Right now our slopes are white everywhere, just down the road Hopfgarten has a ribbon of white running down the lower part of the mountain. Early March is normally fine and often relatively quiet which keeps the snow better.

@Chris_n, as you're a local, can you recommend any good budget eating places in Niederau? I'm maybe going to book a package which is B&B only, so will be needing somewhere to eat in the evenings (unless I can get a reasonably priced upgrade to half board).

There aren't really any budget budget options other than the odd hotel that will (used to? don't really know as it's not something I do). Most of the hotels also have an a la Carte menu, probably best checking on line for prices, just click the links on Google Maps. There used to be a pizzeria but that closed when they rebuilt the supermarket it was attached to. Most people on a budget are self catering. The local supermarket sells prepacked and made to order sandwiches if you want to keep lunch costs down.

@Chris_n, thanks for that. Handy tip about the sandwiches. The cost of upgrading to HB at the hotel I'm looking at turned out to be very reasonable (I emailed them), so I'll probably just do that if I go for this holiday.

No it's under new (local) ownership. I've suggested an update to Google maps.

Those tube magic carpets are springing up everywhere. I was watching the webcam somewhere else - Morzine I think before they changed the webcam - and you could watch it get built in a very few weeks.

I recently added Niederau as part of the Zillertal section of my webcam viewer site, for anyone wanting to quickly check out multiple webcams in the area. I also try to make it clear which lift each camera is near. https://snow.obsession.cam/zillertal

Hi all. We're arriving this Friday in Alpbach, how are conditions? Looks like possibility of some new snow this weekend?

On piste snow conditions are very good particularly in the morning but will likely deteriorate earlier in the day due to massive numbers of people on the slopes next week (Dutch main half term). Snow this weekend could make all the difference.

Great news! Coming on March 7, so this should help the base very nicely for then.

Avalanche on Schatzberg (Auffach) in the direction of Alpbach this morning caught 3 skiers (maybe boarders). One had to be resucitated! I'm guessing this is off the side of the Wurmegg piste (no13) from the description.
