 Poster: A snowHead

Hi - just wondering what experiences people have had going to VT for opening weekend? Good number of slopes normally open? Normally ok snow cover?
I appreciate weather is key to this but I went in March and loved it so thinking already about 6 and a bit months time.

In general, over the years, VT has opened as scheduled, with a fair few runs open. We've always enjoyed it when we've visited in the opening week. BUT:
- Don't expect it to be on the same scale as in the depths of winter. Some runs will probably be topped up with snowmaking.
- It has been known (most recently in the last couple of years?) for the opening to be delayed by a week due to lack of snow.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

There this season. Absolute joy to be skiing in November - but wish hadn’t brought new skis to the party as every slope including from 3000m had pebbles popping through. Will be there next year- with hire skis!

Plenty to go at usually on piste, one year in the last 10 or so opening was delayed so its pretty snow sure. No real need to book in advance so could wait til week before or so to reduce your risk!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Agree re generally decent conditions for VT opening. The last few seasons I’ve done the PSB in Tignes. Pistes have been great in general with a decent amount open and links to Val d’Isere mostly open. Early season skiing is usually great and very quiet on the slopes.

Thanks for the tips. I’m think first weekend in December in the end so if they delay a week I’ll still be fine. Maybe not booking is the answer. Just book the week off work and then decide in November…..

@Warnergb7, we tend to go for the early December weekend as well and it's been good -save for 2024 when I broke my arm -though the snow was superb that weekend!

@Warnergb7, other factors to consider: weather can be more variable, in particular it might be a LOT colder than March so dress accordingly; and lifts will close perhaps 30-45 minutes earlier.

Physics says less snow cover on steeper parts, if that matters. Fine for blues.
