Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

We've headed up to go ski touring at Cairngorm tomorrow. Looking very promising from Drumochter area northwards. The funicular track is just visible on the right of the last photo Very Happy

I'll be driving home from Lairg on Friday, sorely tempted to chuck my ski stuff in the van for an afternoon at Cairngorm!

A brilliant day ski touring at Cairngorm @Derek Branflake Very Happy - despite the wind picking up much earlier than forecast.

We started skinning up about 09.45, with the wind getting up.as we climbed the Fiacail Ridge tow line. After an hour of ascent it was very gusty. Despite that, we climbed to Cairngorm summit, by which point it was pretty blowy. The summit area was very rocky but the views were brilliant.

Snow back down to the top of the Ptarmigan Tow was a mix of riding frozen sastrugi waves to nice, chalky windblown. The piste conditions were excellent - lovely packed powder down to the bottom of the Ciste Tow. The Ciste below the tow looked absolutely brilliant - lovely snow and very wide - but from the bottom of the tow, we climbed back up the Ptarmigan Bowl.

We finished the day with the White Lady, (which was absolutely perfect - packed powder) and a spot of combat skiing from the middle station to the daylodge.

The wind looks bad for tomorrow (60mph?) but we're heading south tonight anyway.

^^^ looks like a good day to be out @mountainaddict . Got my eye on the forecast for the weekend, either one last(?) tour of the season or Glencoe or Cairngorm with the kids. Hope the warm weather doesn't do too much yo the cover that's left before the next colder spell arrives.

Us too @kitenski! See you there? Very Happy In May 2021, we had two fantastic, sunny days skinning up at Nevis Range - gondola up, then on foot to the snowline in Snowgoose Gully. The car thermometer read 28C after skiing on one of the days!

Then there was Cairngorm in June of the same year! Very Happy We dare to dream!

I remember it well @kitenski Very Happy - but, as we've ski toured a lot at closed Glencoe over the years, I didn't know when it was! Where did that five years go? Shocked

Weather-wise, the outlook doesn't look great in the Highlands for the next two weeks rolling eyes And we'll be in Switzerland/France from 19-26 April for a Magic Pass final fling, plus a few days in Tignes.

Got a very handy auntie who lives just off the A85. Visiting her with my son tomorrow. Booked him skis at Glencoe on Monday and Cairngorm Tuesday. Hoping for better than February when we skied at Glenshee but had a walk to a (relatively spectacular) waterfall and a drive down Glen Etive instead of a day at Glencoe due to the wind. Hopefully the snow/rain line will be below 650m for most of tonight and tomorrow but forecast is Puzzled

@Alastair Pink, the back corries at Nevis look incredible as well!! Such a shame they’ve let that area go to ruin

@kitenski, Nevis Range's statement would have been more accurate if they'd said " We are CLOSED for snowsports due to us having no interest in snowsports" Evil or Very Mad

They were indeed @orange.

After seeing good cover on the webcams in mid February, and not having been there for years, Mrs MA and I booked a night at the new Nevis Range Hotel. We arrived late after a 300 mile drive and planned to ski the next day. The following is an excerpt of my Snowheads trip report (13 Feb 2026)... Confused

Quote:
Arrived at the ticket office at 09.25, intent on being on the first gondola at 09.30 - to find it had broken down minutes before and that it might take 3 hours to fix. The issue was the lone mechanic was at the top of the hill, working on grooming runs, so he was stuck...
We could've cried!

You really couldn't make it up Sad We ended up driving to Glencoe and having a good day there.

I have been meaning to start a separate topic about Nevis Range.
The new management team (headed by Chris O'Brien) are an absolute disgrace.

The business plan is very much to focus on the hotel and biking.
They would rather close for the winter months.
Now - From purely economic interest that might make sense.
Skiing is expensive and weather dependent.
The infrastructure and hardware expensive to maintain.
However: it ignores the fact that skiing / ice climbing is the one activity that brings visitors to Fort William between January and March.

They have basically been gaslighting the public with their claims of insufficient snow.
Nevis Range management look like absolute fools as the hill is presently loaded with snow.

A real shame - as Aonach Mor a unique place to ski very different from the other Scottish areas.

I was being sarcastic.

What h_t says above is entirely correct, I also have insight from my 'bike' job and even that side of things is quite shoogly in terms of them going it alone with nary input from anywhere else with experience/skill. They are massively missing the mark. While the DH WC will come back thanks to the hard work of other agencies this won't really help much as the damage is done.

Totally agree @Haggis_Trap. We've had some epic days and runs in Scotland over the years, with the Back Corries at Nevis being up there with the best of them - especially the day we were with fresh snow, blue sky and the Braveheart Chair running.

Yes, such a shame... Confused
