This is brilliant news! We are heading to Pitztalerhof in two days. I realise that’s a fair few miles the other side of Innsbruck but a dump like that doesn’t look regional!
Lovely picture @swskier!

@EdYarker, likely there was even more snow that way, that tends to be the case. Certainly St Anton is showing avalanche level 4, where as Zillertal is level 3.

i"m looking at doing hochzillertal from april 5 to april 9, i notice the snow depths are quite decent for April, but the temperatures next week are forecast to be 20 centigrade, i imagine the snow will turn to slush very quickly, so will i get in a full days skiing, or is it just mornings for skiing.

Have booked a flight to Innsbruck arriving tomorrow. Have had my head turned by Snowbombing despite being just over 12 months away from turning 50. Much to my surprise, I can get a room in town for less than 55 Euro per night.
I generally prefer to stay somewhere with cooking facilities now, but at this short notice, I'm wondering how bad an idea Mayrhofen / Snowbombing would be...

@philusher76, I was in Kühtai a couple of weeks ago. Conditions were superb and they've had more snow since then. If there is enough skiing for you in Kühtai together with Hochoetz, then I'd go there. Much higher resort and lower temps forecast then Kaltenbach. Plus there's ski in, ski out accomodation and a shorter transfer. The north Kaiserbahn/lift side did get a bit of a band of soft sugary snow low down in the afternoons when the south side was still great. A Föhn wind effect according to a Munich skier I spoke to. Happy to try and answer any other questions.

So, I was planning on going to Hintertux today and Zell tomorrow... but as rain / snow is forecast tomorrow, I'm wondering whether it would be better to do Zell today and Hintertux tomorrow.
Thoughts please?

Personally I would rather be in the sun on Hintertux. There is nowhere to hide up there.
You may find tomorrow’s rain arrives in the afternoon so get up early tomorrow and ski until it arrives.

Thanks @Matrix
I was keen to cover as much of the Zillertal Arena as possible and just happy to get up to the glacier at all, so stuck with my original plan, but got first Green Line bus to Hintertux yesterday.
Good job I did as visibility wasn't great first thing and only got worse as the day went on.
Early start and early finish meant I had time for a nap before going to see Orbital at midnight and then a few more hours sleep before the first Zillertalbahn train out of Mayrhofen this morning.
Conditions up high at Hintertux should be awesome first thing today. It was raining from around mid-station when I left. Slightly envious of those going there, but have managed a LOT of boarding this week and Orbital were brilliant, so am happy with my lot!

@GuyrillaMonsoon, is the festival getting back to the size of pre Covid? Seemed smaller last year (we were in the resort not at the festival) on the mountain. They still manage some awesome headliners.

Not been before so can't make personal comparison, but have heard rumours that they could sell up to 7000 tickets and had only sold 1500. Certainly didn't have any trouble walking straight in to any event.
Spoke to security guard at street party (which was almost completely empty at 6pm for Hot 8 Brass Band) and he said he'd worked when almost 5000 watched Fatboy Slim on the Forest Stage. Certainly nothing like those numbers around.
Heard another rumour that they only have the licence for 2 more years. If true, I wouldn't be surprised to see it come to an end.

Having Orbital , De La Soul and Hot 8 Brass Band was a pretty good lineup. Assumed full festival tickets weren't doing great business when they had posters up for Orbital as a standalone gig.

If anyone fancies earning some turns, the slopes at Spieljoch still look reasonable.
Alternatively, conditions up at Hintertux are great once the initial firmness eases off.

I was there for the last couple of hours of Spieljoch's last day of the season.
Understandably, it was reasonably soft underfoot due to the temperature, but as there was barely anyone there, the pistes weren't cut up terribly like the ones at similar altitude in Mayrhofen.
I think you'd be walking up quite a way before skinning up, unless there are places to park en route.
Where do you stand legally as regards accessing pistes outside of the season opening dates though?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
@GuyrillaMonsoon, you could drive to the middle station i guess and walk up from there, skinning on some snow from what's visible down here.
No idea legalities, but it's pretty common up at Hochfügen I believe after the season. We tried it a bit in our first season and plenty of others were doing the same.

Admittedly I’ve only seen it before the season starts rather than after it closes, but generally there will be signs prohibiting travel on pistes when they don’t want you there. I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t allow you there after the season since they have no liability for you and they don’t need the snow anymore. It’s more understandable at the start when they’re building their base and don’t want you wrecking it.
