Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is anyone else on the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff for charging their EV? Just has an email from Octopus confirming a change in their IOG rates from 1 April. I'm currently paying 7p per kWh but from 1 April the rate will be 3.49p per kWh. Not what I was expecting, and certainly welcome. Cost of filling the car from 0% to 100% when charging at home, giving about 300 miles range, will be about £2.70 Very Happy

Laughing I'm sure it's genuine, was expecting a rate change on 1 April when the new price cap comes in to force. Was expecting it to drop a small amount, not by 50%.

I’ve got the same. I’m not sure if that is ongoing as my fixed contract is ending at the end of April and the next off peak rate was supposed to be 8.5p/kWh.

No, two separate issues I think. The price reduction we’re about to see on 1 April on the Octopus IOG tariff is driven by the government’s energy price cap, calculated quarterly by OFGEM. As it’s a government price cap other energy suppliers should also reduce their unit prices. I saw Eon had announced they would reduce their off-peak EV tariff to around 5p per kWh.

The cap for April-June was calculated before the war in Iran, so I assume the next price cap calculation will go up because of price increases in the oil and gas markets. So this might be just a brief opportunity to see how cheap it can be to run an EV if you can charge at home. My girlfriend has a petrol powered Kia Soul which I think has a similar range when it starts with a full tank. I filled it up yesterday from near empty and it cost nearly £70, which is quite the contrast to the less than £7 it currently costs me to recharge my EV, never mind the £2.60 it will cost me from next month.

@rob@rar, 've been onto Octopus this morning, this reduction is for the fixed rate (apparently I'm on the variable IOG). I didn't even know there were two versions of IOG!! Now debating if I switch to the fixed.....or see what they do about the variable IOG. Although it's only offering me 5.49 it's still a nice drop from 7p!

Edit, I currently pay 27.88p 05:30- 23:30 and 7p 23:30-05:30, if i switch to fixed IOG the offer for my postcode is 31.66p and 5.49p so need to do some Excel work!

Finally got my email as I'm on variable Intelligent Octopus Go

Standing charge up from 57.159 to 61.750p
Day unit rate down from 27.879p to 26.084p
Night unit rate down from 7p to 5.2p

I suspect as this is variable it's going to go up on the next price cap change!!

Back on topic just returned from our second EV trip to the alps. Went v smoothly. Mainly Tesla charging (slightly speed limited due to 400v Tesla chargers not being able to go beyond 97kw on my 800v car) but with some quicker charges at other service station chargers.

Only one instance of service station Easter chaos was at the Aire de Dijon which was rammed but where I managed to avoid the worse (20 car queue) by luckily going to the left hand bank not right. Some IC cars funnelled mistakenly down behind me on the badly signposted EV lane to get out only to find themselves blocked by queuing evs. One English lady came to moan at me but there was no chance I was going to drive on and loop the entire services on 5% to let her out and find myself at the back or worse still back on the autoroute.


I finally bought a Bluetooth odb dongle and used abrp with live data. Makes for a sophisticated solution with reassurance around not knowing in advance the impact of running with a roofbox for long high speed runs.

Yeah, that Djion service area is a nightmare. I ran into the overcrowding and badly design layout problems twice. There won't be a third, will definitely skip that stop and go onto the next Ionity set of chargers.

Which ODB dongle did you use btw? My car worked with the Enode live data but I want to try the dongle next time.

Hi all. I'm driving my plug in hybrid to Chatel in a couple of weeks. Normally I don't recharge en route, but given the current fuel issues I probably will.

In your experience what's the best app for EV chargers in France?

Driving from the Maurienne valley to Calais yesterday we saw big queues for the chargers at most service stations and overhead signs warning of ‘saturation’. Sometimes the queue was so long that it caused problems for other drivers too.

Obviously, this is a week after easter so very busy but don’t expect to just rock up to a charging point.

We had that services charger chaos a couple of years ago after new years week. Decided to come off the autoroute and go on the N and D roads via the plentiful rapid chargers that are in most decent sized towns. Made for a much longer day and as I hadn’t discovered the ABRP app with ODB dongle solution then there was quite a lot of faffing with various charger apps and the cars sat nav. With ABRP it would be a doddle. Just exclude toll roads and let it do its thing.

@altis, Same today on a relatively quiet Sunday afternoon. I wouldn’t like to be travelling in an EV on the busy summer Saturdays.

It wasn’t that bad. We did a trip to the alps last August and only had to wait for longer than 10 minutes for a charger twice.

@chocksaway, I wonder if many with a second vehicle have left the petrol/diesel ones behind in favour of the EV due to the possible fuel issues and increased costs.
