We were in Saalbach last week and what an amazing place. Oodles of snow falling every day and although it was super busy the lifts were generally pretty able to cope with it. There are a few pinch points, but it was half term and their carnival Fasching holiday. There's something for every age and ability there, great entertainment and restaurants - worth booking the ones in Saalbach as they got very busy.
We did some night skiing, a first for me, and tobogganing. My daughter had a couple of lessons from the guy who runs the Penhab school and she came on a lot. I tagged along and improved my generally appalling technique.
We had the benefit of Tatmantours' Patience, extensive knowledge and general bonhomie. Would absolutely go back although as my wife's not into skiing it won't be for a couple of seasons.
The reds are pretty doable (although we went for Tatmantours recommendations, dunno if they're all as good) and if anything it was the blues that end in the town which get a bit overused by the end of the day and can be bumpy (see also poor technique!). Best trip for a while!

@mattiwilkin, the stop you want to get off the 260 bus (before it gets to Zell am See) is “Maishofen Abzw. Glemmtal”. As @radar, says, from that stop you walk down a path for a very short distance to the number 680 bus stop.
To make it absolutely clear, the number 260 goes from directly outside the airport terminal to Zell am See, but you get off a couple of miles before Zell.
The number 680 is the local bus that plies between Zell am See and Saalbach, so you get on it at Maishofen, which is between Zell and Saalbach.
The whole journey should take around 2 hours and cost less than €20. |
I'm arriving in Saalbach on Saturday and planning on taking the 260 and 680 buses from the airport to Saalbach itself. we do have a guest mobility ticket and yet when buying the bus ticket in advance and selecting 'guest mobility ticket' which comes up on the very long list of possible discount options, it still shows a 5.9EUR charge which is ridiculously cheap, I know, but I'm just curious as to why there's a charge at all when it's meant to be free? My other question is whether anyone knows whether buying a ticket in advance does guarantee you a seat on that bus as I've heard it can get very busy so I'm obviously concerned that I won't get on! Any comments on previous experiences welcome! Thanks.

@Rav, Brundl have a shop near the Kholmais lift station, which will be your closest, the best value is Hansi Best price especially if you mention Tatmantours.
Bründl Sports Kohlmaisbahn
Skiliftstraße 365

@Rav, Hervis isn't round the corner from the Eva Garden, which is located on the same road as the Kholmais lift and the Brundl shop. If your going to Hervis you might as well go to Hansi

@Grizwald, From the GB Ski Club Rep, "As I’m sure you know it’s been a bit wet in Saalbach Hinterglemm today. As a result the mountain was much quieter than normal but there was still fun to be had.
What you might not know is it’s been snowing higher up and the forecast for tomorrow is better weather and it could be a cracker.
The ideal opportunity to meet me tomorrow for more Social Skiing with your Ski Club of Great Britain Rep.
I’ll be at the A1 Schattberg X-press all this week and next. The meeting time for Monday to Friday is 9:00 for a start at 9:15. Sunday is a bit later at 9:15."

Heading to Zell on Saturday for 5 days and will absolutely be making the effort to come to my beloved S-H for at least a day or two of skiing. We usually do our apres in Hinterglemm (Goaßtahl and Schwarzacher) but thinking of doing Soul House when we're over. What days are the band on? Have skied past it loads but always before the apres starts.

Does anyone have a sense of what conditions might be like for the week of 8th March? I usually tend towards the high French resorts for good snow (3V, Espace Killy, Paradiski etc) but quite fancy a change and we're looking at Zell am See (can't see a separate thread for there). I know there's the glacier but wondering what the rest of the area and surrounding accessible areas might be like at that time? How slushy does it typically get in the afternoons?

I'm also for Zell am See but on 14th March, there doesn't look to be a lot (any) of snow on the forecast and warm temps so i'm also curious to hear what it might be like...

Just got back from a week in Hinterglemm. Had pretty much 3 days snow to begin with followed by 3 days sun and high temps, many runs getting chopped up by 11ish. Bernkogel, Reiterkogel and Hochalm quite bad by lunch time. On a positive note it did plenty for my confidence in moguls and slush. Any skiing better than no skiing

Also just back from Saalbach... tremendous week... after a couple of years of fallow snow it was amazing to have a proper dump followed by hot sun.. can’t think it will last long in these temperatures. Soulhouse was as good as ever with Peter and the band (and their new singer!), highlight was seeing ‘Steve - a British Middle Aged Finance manager’ get up and belt out Angels with them.... the crowd including the dutch and Austrians went wild for it! Also enjoyed BergerAlm and Maislam with its ‘Schibiza’ event.
Finally completed ‘The Challenge’ which on a snowboard I hope I get extra points for. We stayed in the Jufa AlpenHotel which was good, but prefer both SaalbacherHof and Kendler.
Biggest plus was seeing all my friends enthusing about the area and already planning Saalbach 2027.

As previously mentioned, “Steve” is my first cousin (my mother’s sister’s son). He’s inherited my share of the family “singing genes”.

Someone on Snowheads , probably the most popular Skiing forum, has just posted this.

Middle aged…??!!
Bless him
He might have good ears but I think his eyes have let him down on this occasion.”
(Tongue in cheek evidently, as Steve’s in his 60s)

Hello folks, currently out staying in Hinterglemm.
First day yesterday was a mixed bag. Low cloud meant that up high you often found yourself skiing in soup, with the sun breaking through later in the afternoon. We’re a short walk to the Reiterkogelbahn, so we spent the morning on the south facing slopes before heading over to Zwölferkogel and Schattberg, then back across the valley.
Today was much better in terms of visibility. Decent cloud cover stopped the pistes getting too baked. We headed over to Fieberbrunn in the morning, then back to the Zwölferkogel area for late afternoon laps.
It’s warm, definitely spring like, but there’s still good snow to be had if you plan your day and aspects strategically. I don’t mind a bit of slush, but some runs are getting challenging from early afternoon onwards if you’re not on it.
Looks like overcast skies tomorrow, so we might head out towards Leogang and possibly tick off the full circuit.
