Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

ok really positive that NL, DK and E/S/I are one week later.
I think this week will be better in Austria or maybe Switzerland instead of France ... at least for us

Quite a newbie for these, I'm restricted to going in the English Feb half term (Partner is a teacher), looks like it's gonna be hella busy. Any suggestions of areas that maybe wouldn't be so busy according to this?

where are heading the Skiers from Zone C ? Generally speaking....
Toulouse and Montpellier are South, so the South Alps are affected, Paris is on the other Side of France, so the Northern Alps are affected? is France a no-go next HT?
The Zone C is the worst?

@hogofwar, usual suggestion is Italy. Or have a mindset shift to accept the busyness. Being in ski school (as you said you are a newbie) would help a bit as you get priority on the lifts.

@turms2, not sure it makes much odds.

It's never a no go. Just depends if you have alternatives and an acceptance of the busyness.

We even did it once. Actually I was also in Serre Chev donkeys years ago during holidays. We got by.

the only alternative is no-go

we will go definitely Christmas/New Year and Easter
the question is if its worth it in this week (Carneval) or not.
Howerver i will go in Les Gets this year in HT. I can check it out there.
Last couple of years in Chamrousse (perfect) and Flaine was ok. But it was not with Zone C

@hogofwar, I would recommend heading for a small resort that you've probably never heard of before. As a beginner you won't need many miles of pistes. A large resort can feel intimidating / frustrating and will attract those that like to hoone about.

I'd always recommend one of our favourites, Albiez-Montrond in the Maurienne Valley. Tiny but delightful with a beginner friendly feel.

@abricotine, if this dates are 100% right, then the week 2th to 9th Januar is perfect for france and carneval week for switzerland. Even if the Netherlands come a week after, the carneval Week in south germany leads to some overcrowded resorts in Austria

The government recommends 13–20 February for the southern Netherlands. However, because Carnival is celebrated in the south, most schools there choose to close between 6 and 13 February instead.

Our two's school in their wisdom have decided to break up on Wednesday 16th pre xmas - which removes the pre xmas week option we like unless they miss a few days. They go back on a Wednesday too which rules out the post new year week too.

We have 13-20th Feb for kids HT. Looks like Italy or Austria might be the best option with Carnaval being the week prior. We've had quiet-ish weeks in Switzerland for prior HT's but Geneva and Zurich holiday clash might scupper that. Def not France with A&C off.

Easter looks a good option for us, kids break up midday on 24th March. Could be in the alps that evening on a cheap midweek flight. Could work well for an extended trip until 3rd/4th April somewhere high in France if we can find an option we can book from midweek.

@Dk7, the number of Swiss families skiing is very small compared to the German and French equivalent. There is usually a handy Dutch website which shows this in a bar chart against the holiday weeks, but it’s not available yet.

@Dk7, yes the Carneval Week in Germany ist one week before, but if the Netherland have in the week 13-20 Feb, then Austria will be also relative crowded. Of course not as when they go all together.

Not sure why but Wales Feb half term is early and so is the start of Easter holidays. Feb clashes with France zone C so I think Easter looms the best choice. My son is in his last year of school so won’t have to worry about this again.

why did they change it?
ok the week 2nd till 9th January seems the best till now. No French holidays, no Dutsch Holidays.
But why they change it for the Februar Week..oh man
According to this Excel, the carneval Week 7-14 Feb, there is the C Zone in France (45%) , and 43% of the Swiss??
That means that France and Switzerland will be overcrowded.
It will be really difficult.
I thought it will be a good idea to avoid France and head to Switzerland. But so will do almost 40% of the Swiss.

Places like Flaine or PDS will be definitely too crowded. Will be better lets say in Val Cenis , Valloire etc? or is France a no go?
And in Switzerland?
and ideas?

@Dk7, thanks, I love this diagram!

@turms2, I never find there are enough Swiss to overcrowd Swiss slopes! It’s German holidays that make a huge difference where I go. This year is much better for us at half term as the Feb peak is spread out whereas it was focused on one week this year. Plus the weather sucked!

If French C zone is on holidays I would look at German speaking areas.

Meaning the land where the Dutch live. Fundamentally, there is something wrong with the English language approach to European geography. Not surprising for an island called "big Brittany", where the largest country got its own name wrong* and the second largest didn't do a lot better†.

* The Saxons unified much of Britain and called it Angle-land.
† "Scot" originally meant "Irish"

@Layne, Yeah, we're Easter skiers too (both teachers so school holidays only for us). The factor which usually defines which particular week we go is the cost of flights which is very dependent on whether Easter weekend is at either end of the week we go.

"Britain" derives from Latin, and before that Greek - and you can go further back into the very mistiest mists of time. Brittany/Bretagne was so called because of the migration of British/Celtic tribes to the area from Britain.

But I sense a thread drift from the impact of European school holidays on ski resorts.
