We're driving from our base in Aosta to Gressoney tomorrow. I'm hoping to detour to Cervinia/Valtourneche on route.
Any chance that the link to Zermatt will be open? |
This is the forecast wind for Sunday. The upper line is the gusts and the shading is the range of possibilities. Decent chance if that turns out that the link will be open.

Great news!!!!! This gives me added confidence of the detour being worth it. Had there not been a realistic chance of it opening, I'd have just pushed on to Gressoney.

It took a bit, but the link opened maybe 1030 or so(?).
One thing my son and I noticed was the condition of the runs seemed to be better on the Swiss side. We think it's because everyone on the Italian side... Whether they're on a wide open slope of a narrow cat track skis like they're Alberto Tombo....either in full Slalom or Giant Slalom form. The Swiss didn't seem as vigilant on aggressive carving.
As snowboarders it's annoying when you're trying to keep speed on a flat section and everybody's taking up the entire piste. I've also never seen groomed runs get as chopped as quickly as I've seen so far this trip.

Any suggestions for good ski hire places in Cervinia? I know booking in advance online is cheaper but I like to see the options shops have before I commit. As a shortie who skis at a reasonable level the options aren’t always great for me. Would prefer an all mountain type ski but know that this isn’t always an option in Europe. Don’t even care if the service is not great, I just want decent quality skis that aren’t ancient beat up models or beginner skis.

FWIW, a tech in Cervinia said the snow can be better on the Zermatt side as it's more in the shade vs. Cervinia.

I’ve just come back from Valtournenche. Loved it and had lovely snow. As we didn’t even get to Cervinia (let alone Zermatt) I feel like I have unfinished business, and the kids benefit from familiarity (as much as I want to tick off new resorts).
I’m assuming that Valtournenche is as good as anywhere in the alps for 27 March 2027? Given it’s at 1500m and Cervinia is 2000m?

You are definitely into spring skiing by then. As you know the Valtournenche skiing is all (bar one run) above Salette, which is 2245m. Similarly most of the Cervinia skiing is above Plan Maison, which is 2,555m. So you are skiing very high. It usually is really pleasant (except for the home runs) but it is mainly south facing so there is a risk. The Swiss side, which is mainly north facing, can be better by this time of the year. There are fewer storms so there is less risk of the links being closed (but less never equals zero).

@JohnMo, thank you. We’re kind of committed because my 9yo has been promised that we won’t ski on his birthday, which always falls in Feb half term!
I’m hoping he’ll grow out of that by 2028 when Easter is later.

Hey everyone, some friends are looking at Cervinia 11-18 April… what is skiing/vibe like that time of season? I thought most
Resorts would be finishing up around that time?

He doesn't want to ski on his birthday??? I suppose there's probably a party to be had at home...
Cervinia is as good as anywhere late season as it has quite a lot of high terrain, 3 lifts around 3300 as I recall. Some other resorts may have a lift to that height but I don't think they have as many runs. It only lacks a glacier to keep the snow cold but that would again tend to only benefit a run or two.
I remember looking at an app that showed the terrain and was surprised to see quite a lot of it was west facing, am I imagining that @JohnMo?
@Drifter210, it stays open till early may, then sometimes at weekends into may if the snow is good. I think the vibe is sunny and fun, I remember seeing a video online of lots of italians dressed up for some kind of party

Most of the ski runs are from east to west. But the bowl effect of Cervinia is created by the high Alpine ridge (including the Matterhorn) that runs west to east, north of the ski area and then at the east side curves round southwards. So the bowl is sort of south west facing. There is a similar effect from the lower mountains around the Valtournenche bowl.
You might be able to make out what I mean from the topographical map below.

@8611, I know, I would love to ski on my birthday every year! Doesn’t know he’s born etc etc.
Obviously I desperately want it to be a good trip next Easter, but now that he’s seen how bleak new year can be, a slushy Easter might make him grow up and return to Feb the year after…

In the middle of a fabulous week in Zermatt. After the dreadful weather last week it’s been clear blue skies and very warm (perhaps a bit too warm for the time of year, but won’t complain). Snow is great, a bit soft in lower slopes after lunch due to the temperature and warm sun
Links have been open everyday so far so been over to Cervinia and Valtournenche without issue.
I remember someone mentioning loading your pass on your phone rather than than keycard - it needs special ‘yellow’ gates to get through, which seems universally the case in Zermatt, but over in Italy it seems more usual to have only one of the 4 or 5 gates compatible for now, so I’d stick with a keycard for now. Saves on phone battery power too I’m sure
And for a bit of feedback on my earlier questions:
- parking in Täsch in the main station was not a problem, lots of availability
- Tim at Julen Sports fitted my daughter with new boots, very helpful guy and took a lot of time with her. The next day they were causing a few issues with her toes so we went back at lunchtime and Will managed to sort them out by heating and expanding the toe area a bit. Really showed a benefit of getting the boots in resort, even if we could have got them a bit cheaper at home near Geneva.

Hi Snowheads. Myself and my two kids are visiting Cervinia for the second week of our school holidays. I need to book ski school group lessons for the youngest of the two. Looking online I can't really see much difference between the two schools that operate from Cervinia. Does anyone have experience or knowledge that might help me choose? Thanks
