 Poster: A snowHead

@Snow&skifan, we had my brother out for January, his daughter for 1st 2 weeks and wife for 2nd. Wife started feeling grubby day she left - so caught "it" somewhere in Chamonix, she doesn't ski, no buses or trains, lots of fresh air, likely too long since flight, was in bed for a week on return, it then cycled through the rest of us, lastly my bro who also took to his bed for a week when he got home.
Points being, it's not planes and we wouldn't be wearing masks around the house (or at all, anyway).

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I always used to come home with a sniffle. And once with something I'd actually describe as being ill.
Until the post-covid year when you had to wear masks in public spaces like lift queues, my firend turned me on to the Burton/Anon magnetic buffs. I now wear this probably 99.9% of the time during the day skiiing.
No illness since, touch wood. I know you don't "catch a cold" from being cold, but the adverse conditions can have an effect and previously 8 hours of subzero temps I'm sure wasn't good for my respiratory system. Plus I guess avoiding the variety of foreign bugs on the mountain shared spaces. All the british bugs I'm exposed to on a gatwick flight and charter coach I'm already immune to?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'd also note that there's precious little to no good research on whether wearing the standard surgical mask does any good to reducing aerosol transmission. I'm not convinced that it can, mechanically. Too much necessary airflow in and out round the sides.

It's winter, viruses circulate, you might pick one up, for most it's not serious. C19 turned some into irrational germophobes. I doubt a surgical mask will do much good.

I had advice from a frequent flyer, she said mostly likely to get gems from surfaces such as tables and arm rests, so keep washing your hands !!

I've noticed that since covid all the medical people that I see who would have previously worn surgical masks, like dentists and opticians, now wear FFP2 masks as standard.

Irrational germophobia is a good point. I know the adult son of friends won't touch a door handle or steering wheel/ gear lever without a disinfectant wipe and frequently does full scrub in hand/arm washes. And all this on the family home. A hidden casualty of covid.

We’re not clinically vulnerable at all or elderly. On flights to/from ski trips in January we feel we caught colds that lasted an age and made us feel like crap. On the flights we’d occasionally hear close by the mother of all uncovered sneezes. Very few folk will cancel a flight because they’re in the middle of a cold.
You can see why some nationals such as Japanese (even pre 2020) have often been pro masks in enclosed spaces.
It crossed my mind to do the same, to try to swerve another winter cold. |
Just need to make sure it's an FFP3 rated mask otherwise you are more or less wasting your time. The surgical masks are basically 100% source control and only work if everyone is wearing them. FFP2 does give some wearer protection but not much. FFP3 is what a doctor/nurse would ideally be wearing while tending to a COVID patient etc. They are not enormously expensive, under a £5 for a disposable one, which in the scheme of things on a skiing holiday is neither here nor there.

| Yeah agreed that planes aren't as bad as other places. But I feel like the passport checks at passport control or the gate aren't great for passing germs around. The gate attendant checking your passport handled 100+ others before yours. |
And now 1000s of people touching those fingerprint machines - only going to get worse!
