Ok I’m talking about natural wild outside mixed Onsens here where you go butt naked after a long days ski touring with your mates . A few years back I found this place “fukiage”in the daisetsuzan national park which was frequented mainly by local Japanese and a few westerners but when I visited last year and this year I noticed that some westerners were wearing bathing costumes which made other bathers feel awkward. There are no signs or rules posted around the Orson but it’s quite obvious of the adequate of this place and I found it disrespectful to the Japanese if you’re shy there’s another Onsen a short distance away which is segregated.
Also I heard people complaining of the nakedness of some people “letting it all hang out in front of children “on social media !
If you went to a nudist beach would you complain? Surely knot.
Let it all hang out and if you don’t like it fek of somewhere else!.

Isn’t it backward? Shouldn’t it be the bathing costume wearing ones feel awkward rather than those who are naked?

The only time you wear swimwear in an onsen is if it's a tourist one that explicitly say you can/should. If it doesn't say 'wear swimsuit' it's implicitly 'no swimsuits'.
And if someone's worried about going naked ask them if they really think all those Japanese people have gotten together, planning this whole 'naked' think as a trap hundreads of years in the planning, and randomly going to different onsen all over thr country just in the hope they might be in there when you visit - all to get a little glimpse of your naked body between removing your modesty towel (which should never go into the bath) at the edge of the bath and slipping below the surface of the water? That's quite the ego if they think it's the case, otherwise MTFU, you're body 'aint that good!

I don't think it is people thinking anything like that, it is just that many British people (and Americans even more so) think that public or semi-public nudity is "wrong", and don't want anybody but their life partner seeing them naked.
Even though I'm British, it is an attitude I just don't understand, but I know it is how many feel.

@alex_heney, if you don't like nudity then don't go to an Onsen or, for that matter, to a Sauna. Simple.
You will likely be told in no uncertain terms that you are out of line if you try wearing bathers in a 'Textilfreie Zone' around here!

Well that's absolutely fine, isn't it? Nobody's forcing them. There are nudist beaches in the UK so what should people who disapprove of nudity do? Leave the country? Or just go to a different beach?

While personally I'd observe the Japanese etiquette, as [b]@Ski Shagger[/] says, the tourist information websites suggest ladies might wish to wear swimming costumes:
https://www.visit-hokkaido.jp/en/spa/spot/detail_10635.html
so understandable. No excuse for them then criticizing those who are observing the normal etiquette.

Whilst in St Anton we were in a mixed sauna and the manager would come into the sauna periodically to tell us English to disrobe , quite funny really as it’s always the English
And yet on the beach in Spain a bit of string will do!!

and there's the key. History tells us that prior to the second war, shared bathing was the norm. After the evil imperialist Japanese state had been defeated, the US (the europeans being busy elsewhere), imposed their idea of morals and shared bathing has been in decline ever since. I'm off to a rare shared onsen tomorrow. The waters are opaque

In Austria this year, the hotel I sayed in had a superb spa area.
Officially a nude only area, but I never saw any sign of that being enforced (it often isn't in hotels, but will be in the separate leisure centres).
All of the Austrians and Germans were always naked, as were many others (including most of the Brits).
But of those who didn't, it wasn't only Brits who insisted on wearing costumes, there was one largish group of Eastern European (I think Croatian, but not certain) who also all kept costumes on.

Absolutely. I was just pointing out why some people are not comfortable with that idea.
And yes, I have seen people kicked out of the Kaiserbad in Ellmau for wearing costumes - they were first given the option to remove them.

I don't think anyone was in any doubt about why some people "are not comfortable with" nudity. But perhaps the problem was the expectation that this discomfort should be indulged in cultural contexts where nudity is normal, and expected. Many British people would outraged if foreign visitors from countries where such behaviour is normal allowed their dogs to foul streets and parks.
But this is normal "good manners", isn't it? Like always taking your shoes off in households where that's the done thing and not prancing into a Catholic cathedral, or a mosque, in skimpy shorts and a barely-there vest top.
And not swearing when visiting a family who don't swear.

Also worth enquiring about tattoo policy if you have any - either all good, stick a plaster over it, or not allowed. In which case a polite thank you is the best response.

I’m not a big onsen fan tbh. I don’t mind the whole naked bit but having a communal bath in 1000 year old knob cheese and butt sweat stew doesn’t really spin my wheels

Even most 'covered tattoo' onsen will have something like a ' 2 plaster' rule - and the plaster's we're talking about aren't that big (say the size of your hand).

The whole point is they aren't. Completely ignoring the fact the water's always changed, often flowing/replaced regularly a major part of onsen etiquette is that you have a thorough wash, in front of everyone else, to show you're body is clean before getting in the shared tub. The bath is for soaking your (clean) body, not washing.

We all know that’s true (many people don’t feel comfortable with nudity). But the point of the original statement was, those same people shouldn’t choose to BE in the vicinity of nudity if they aren’t “comfortable” with it. That’s the part that I and many others have problem with.
I’m allergic to alcohol. So I don’t drink. But I don’t insist others don’t drink alcohol at my table!

I can't remember where it was, as seven or so years ago, but we went to a wild onsen and apart from the gnarly walk to get to it in the snow, it was a case of stripping off buck derrière naked, and I was more worried about slipping off the rocks, and OH was also in the same predicament and I think KenX was, but there were only a few of us and we totally respected going naked etc think we had cold tinnies which was allowed, it actually made going to more normal onsens rather boring after that one !
