Hi. I was just wondering if anyone has recommendations for a good app to use for a family of 6 to track each other on the slopes? We would like to use it to arrange times and locations of meeting if we are separated, but also from a safety point of view should anyone need help. We have a mix of apple and android devices and we are going to 4 vallees, Switzerland. TIA, Amanda.

An AWACS? Maybe a E-3 Sentry might be going cheap, failing that an E-7
Sorry, very bored at work

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Mandhead, Assuming teenagers, just carry a single portable WiFi box. None of them will move out of range!

Again, non-ski specific but you can do it on Whatsapp using 'Share live location'

+1 for Slopes. Create an event and add all the family to it and they’ll all be able to see each other whilst out on the slopes. You can also generate share links for any other parties that may want to see where people are on the slopes. Note, it does require internet connectivity for the locations to update. You don’t need a subscription for location sharing.

@Richard_Sideways, Do you find Whatsapp actually useful for this, in the mountains? I tried it with a friend a few weeks ago, but the lack of any reference points on the map made it difficult to actually visualise where either of us were. All I could see were our two icons heading closer, and then further away again as we totally missed each other! At least Google maps now shows the lift lines for reference – Whatsapp map is just a green blob!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Whatsapp drives off Google maps, so will have the same data, just quick and easy to share to a group you may have setup already.
All these tracking apps are very dependant on when your phone is actually uploading waypoint data back to the network, and how accurate you're setup to relay. If you're transmitting your GPS coordinates, that's more accurate than tower triangulation.

This is where Slopes shines. They have the resorts mapped so it shows if people are on lifts and/or slopes.

 You know it makes sense.

The group I skedi with in January use Maprika. It's free and seemed to work pretty well. As with any of these apps it's only accurate when you've got data.

That's great, thanks everyone. We'll try life360 but also use slopes. I did love the idea of the portable WiFi box though
