Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sadly there isn't any way of checking conditions other than just going @mountainaddict! Yes it was on The Cheviot itself. It was on the eastern-most flank (the one with a quad-track up if you've got OS Maps). Can send you a screenshot and some photos if you want (no clue how to upload to here). This is roughly the area: https://maps.app.goo.gl/7TAePAvtB1h5pa8b9.

I'd been out for a run on The Cheviot on Sunday when it was clear and was suprised to see the amount of snow there so needed to head back up with planks attached snowHead It took me about a hour and a half to walk in from Langleeford, and took the same on the way back out as its pretty slow going through the bogs. The good coverage of snow is only on the North-West facing aspects so you have to walk all the way, but once there you can skin back up. You could probably park up in the College Valley and cycle up to Goldscleugh if you want less of a walk. It was definitely a bit of a mission and I wouldn't get your hopes up too much, but I did have a lot of fun Cool

Thanks a lot @Froguin. I've got the OS Maps App, so can suss it out from that Very Happy

We're very easily pleased on the hiking/skiing front - not averse to driving 250 - 300 miles to ski tour on snow patches in the Highlands in May/June, so can't rule out a future run up to the Cheviots! Very Happy

Fingers crossed that this Yr.no forecast for Fendrith Hill (ie top of Weardale) comes off Very Happy - cold temperatures and a lot of snow next Wednesday.

You need to multiply the level of precipitation shown x10 to calculate the amount of snowfall.

Do you think it'll be open tomorrow? Currently on the way back from a great day at Glencoe. Could potentially stop over somewhere en-route to home and drive straight to Weardale tomorrow wink

That was certainly the plan when I left the hut and it is now confirmed on the website (from 9.30). It was snowing when I left but doesn't look like any more overnight. However, the temperatures are really low so the main areas should be in great condition. Bluebird day as well! I have obligations at home so won't be able to get out there unfortunately.

To reprise @Froguin thoughts on the Cheviot, it looks magnificent currently. Had a few good looks at it from various aspects. I doubt there's much deep and suspect a lot of soft ground underneath the snow but it does look pretty. Not sure I'd chance it as there are plenty of other options either further north or on the club fields right now, but it did remind me how good it can be on there.

Some decent skiing at Weardale today, in beautiful weather.

Mainly lovely cold, powdery snow, with a few grassy bits which skied fine due the frozen ground. Especially good where the newly-delivered piste basher had done its stuff Very Happy

Great day over the hill at Yad Moss too. No queue and lots of skiing today in the perfect sunny and cool snow.
Allenheads was also open today. Unfortunately the north easterly was straight up the slope at Raise so they were not able to open yet. Staying coolish however so fingers crossed for more snowHead
Congratulations to Weardale sorting out a new/pre loved PB600. It’s in the pic above Cool

Having had 3 enjoyable previous trips to ski on Raise, this prompted me to check out the Lake District Ski Club website - only to find:
- There's no longer a current webcam view on the website (I'm not on Twitter or Instagram...).
- There's no snow report online.

Hmmmmm......Confused

@Derek Branflake I actually went back on Saturday and it was fantastic (clear skies rather than thick cloud!). The further down to the burn you dropped the better the snow got, lovely windblown turns between the 750m and 600m contours. Skins on from 375m up the quad track, and managed to ski most the way back down again at the end of the day. Very surreal to be skiing in England with a view of the sea snowHead

Yep, missing that it's not everyone who wants to live their lives through Tik Tok etc. I just can't be ar5€d with them all. I finally joined Facebook a few months back, so that I could read tributes to a deceased family member. It’s yet to change my life - eg Scottish ski area websites are far less informative than I anticipated... rolling eyes

YadMoss update : We are monitoring the forecast, snow on the ground and temperature with a view to opening if possible, it's melted more than we had hoped today sadly.

@mountainaddict, you can just turn off all notifications and use it as read only mode specifically for Raise. UK Backcountry snowsports on Facebook will be right up your street! https://www.facebook.com/groups/502879386398375

Just spotted an unexpected surprise - that the Weardale and Yad Moss webcams are showing what looks like reasonable snow cover.

Weardale website makes no reference to opening, but Yad Moss is planning on opening later on this morning Very Happy

Mrs MA and I are Weardale members, so can ski there at a reduced rate under the reciprocal membership arrangements. However, we need to buy a ticket online in advance. No cash on the day these days. I can't see how to buy a day ticket of any kind on the website. Puzzled It says it can be done via the link to SI Entries - but there's no sign of Yad Moss 17th Feb skiing via the website link... Confused This is what appears:

I'm wondering if @Peter S might see this query and advise wink

It did @kitenski Very Happy All sorted. Not as straightforward as the old cash on the day wink but I'm actually quite impressed by the online booking system. We're already on the SI Entries system through our Weardale memberships, so our details came up automatically. £10 each under the reciprocal arrangements is great.

We're en-route now and should get at least a couple of hours in. I'll report back later.

Thanks again Very Happy

Yad Moss will open Wed 18th Feb

Opening Wed 18th.

A lovely sunny day and the snow pisted well. We intend to open Wed 18th February, day tickets available online only and will be available up to noon on Wed 18th Feb. There are no cash sales on the hill, online only in advance please. https://www.sientries.co.uk/event.php?event_id=17417

Drifts bedside the fences, particularly down the tow track fence and the enclosure fence, have been pisted out to give some decent surface conditions especially on the upper half of the hill. Below pylon 2, the run approaching the bottom is thin and narrow.

A really enjoyable 3hrs at Yad Moss this afternoon Very Happy We had a great time.
- Nice, cold snow, that remained in nice condition throughout.
- Pretty decent cover, especially on the top half of the hill. A few grassy/thinner bits towards the bottom.
- Some lovely groomers.
- Glorious sun.
- No queue - no more than about 10 people there.
- Overall, the best conditions we've skied on our fourth North Pennines day of the winter.
- Should still be ok tomorrow.

Thanks for that @Peter S - yes, we're featured! Mrs MA more than me, which makes up for the fact that I was featured in a Weardale clip a few weeks back, but Mrs MA wasn't wink

We also bumped into Mr Northern Perspectives when we hiked up to ski next to Roseberry Topping earlier in the winter, but unfortunately we'd finished skiing and were on our way back down at that point. There are some lovely videos (skiing and non-skiing) across the north east on his Facebook page.

Yad Moss Ski Touring Report - 19.2.26:
- A fair bit of snow gone since our visit two days ago, especially lower down. Not possible to ski beyond the bottom of the tow.
- Lovely, soft snow - very forgiving conditions.
- 50 metres vertical of very good cover on Enclosure Run.
- 90 metres vertical of fair to good cover on Main Run.
- Patchy, with combat skiing/grass hopping on the lowest part of the main run.
- Quite foggy at times - no views.
- Slight drizzle and 2C when we finished.
- Good time had by all - really glad we made the effort. Felt like an away from it all wilderness experience Very Happy

Properly nithered up at Yad Moss on Wednesday. It Didn’t get above -2c at the ticket office and there was a strong south easterly blowing down the runs all day. The skiing was good where we had been able to piste the main run which was really fast and flat down to Pylon 4. The enclosure run was also good but the snow rather ran out at the bottom where it became quickly narrow and very ‘Pennine’!
There were probably only 30 skiers during the day, but at least four families which was nice to see. We were a long way from having any queues and had loads of runs during the day. We even got a glimpse of the sun after lunch and as is often the case the skiing got better through the day.
We didn’t run yesterday but good to see Mr and Mrs MA using the facilities for self assisted uplift.
Looking forward to the next snowy spell which may be the end of the month/ early March ? snowHead
