Just had an email from SNCF of the 'new' rules on carrying baggage on the TCG Inoui trains. You can carry a suitcase, 1 special item and hand luggage per person. With 'special items' set out as:
Your special item of luggage (musical instrument, covered bike, folded bike, scooter and folding wheelchair) can measure a maximum of 90 x 130 x 50 cm. Bikes, musical instruments, snowboards and skis must be in a labelled cover.
You can travel with your own pair of skis (no maximum dimensions), up to a maximum of one pair per person.
Why the distinction between skis and snowboards, and a max length of 130cm? or is that cumulative dimensions to give an overall volume? it isn't clear.
I will be carrying two snowboards in a wheeled bag 181cm long, and do what I have always done.... carry some bungy straps and strap it upright in the luggage area to the handrail. Never had a problem before....
Is this 'new' and how rigorously is this enforced?.

@Imalittlelost, Seems obvious. Clearly stated that you can carry one set of skis, and if you do there are no maximum dimensions. I do not understand your confusion.
There is a distinction between skis and snowboards because the former is right and the latter is wrong (just kidding!). And are snowbopards generally longer than 130cm anyway? I have no idea.

Something I raised a while back as 2 of my group going out in March are going via train. The long and short of it is, you may want to dodge a really big coffin roller if possible, but nobody seems to be checking or hassling people about it - just be sensible with your luggage, don't block the aisles and you'll probably be ok.
Have a read of this bit on SnowCarbon....
...or this later one.

@Imalittlelost, I doubt they will have bag inspectors to open then to check if they contain skis or a snowboard. If they do say its a new super wide ski for deep powder, then slap your forehead and exclaim you forgot one.

The SNCF site groups together snow boards and aquatic boards (surf boards). I think that the length limit on boards is to prevent people from attempting to travel with things like Californian long-boards which can be not only very long (comparable to jumping skis) but are also wide compared to skis.

I think its in that fine French tradition of setting a rule which everyone is at liberté to ignore, assuming you're not being a bit of a t*t about things in which case expect a man with a thin moustache and a hat to exercise his right to a gallic shrug and a 'non'.

@Imalittlelost, until you said you'd done it before, I was going to say whatever you do don't try and take a wheeled "coffin" bag on the TGVs, as they really fit and are a pain to other passengers for that reason, as they seem to get left in aisles and next to luggage racks. Have you found a way of making them fit in the luggage space?

Bungy strapped vertically to the luggage rack - out the way and fits well enough. Didnt try the overhead shelving - too much of a pain in the backside to get it up there.

The trick is to pack differently Put you board in a simple bag without other stuff and the rest in a holdall. That way the snowboard (or skis) fit in the overhead rack.

There's still no space for a coffin bag there.

@Imalittlelost, the rule has been there for a while, but they seem to be more actively reminding people of it this year. Whether that translates into strict enforcement may be down to individual train managers - and if you are unlucky you can't say you haven't been warned!
I think the issue is not so much the boards themselves, but people putting them in big bags, often rigid, that don't fit well into the available spaces.
Skis in a soft bags will usually fit on overhead racks. If you can do something similar with your board it is probably less likely to be a problem

 You know it makes sense.

@ecureuil, unfortunately, @Imalittlelost, doesn't appear to be going to put their board in a bag that will fit in the overhead racks (or luggage space at the end of the carriages)

SNCF have very strict rules about buying extra spaces if you have more than a suitcase plus hand-baggage. Either buy the ticket online. Or (historically at least) don’t worry about it.

Travelled back from Turin to Paris last week on a full Inoui (well full from Oulx) and there were no problems with baggage at all. Amazing how many bags can be packed, Tetris like, in the baggage areas of the train.
Staff were very pragmatic but there was a warning as French Customs were on the train (the day after sabotage on the Italian network) and they wouldn't let the train leave the station until someone claimed a bag that did not have a baggage tag on.

This is not enforced. I've been on so many trains shared with passengers travelling with skis and snowboards. If you're on a Ouigo train you might find it different though. It's their 'budget' service and you have to pay more for extra bags.

No problem at all taking a snowboard on the (completely full) TGV between Paris and Aime-la-Plagne this week. @Richard_Sideways, were there any issues from your side?
