Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How much is Carnivale likely to affect Italy? Thinking either Austria or Italy for half term next year…

were exactly in Italy? if you mean Aosta valley etc, it will be relatively ok i think.
But if you mean S. Tirol , its really affected ... at least in the carneval Week in DE

My girlfriend and I are traveling through Italy during the Feb 14-22 carnival week (bad timing) and are wanting to do a two day ski holiday somewhere. With the olympics in Cortina and Livigno, we have been debating between Cervinia or going to Serra Chevalier in France. As an American outsider, I would love to get your thoughts on expectations for crowds at these two options. Will Cervinia have manageable crowds - especially if we go during the week, instead of weekend? Any thoughts on if Serra Chevalier would be less crowded? Thanks Smile

Hello!

I'm a ski instructor from Cervinia Smile It is very unlikely to find big queues at the lifts in Cervinia as it is a very big ski resort also Carnival in Italy it's very fragmented, depending on the regions kids have different school holidays.

Another useful resource, always worth a look before travelling to France is the crafty bison

What experience do you need? It's a single zone as opposed to two zones but it includes Paris - it will be very busy. But if you have no choice...

@blahblahblah, I mean anytime is a great time of the year to ski right but once the school hols are over, the days start to lengthen, the lifts open a tad later and the sun shines a tad more...

I wouldn’t think it wouldn’t be just wanted to know how bad it is? I only went in half term as a child have never experienced it as an adult so was just asking how bad is it? Never driven either! Just a question……

@Victoria, I've done HT once, it was post pandemic so I am not sure it was up to full throttle. We stayed in Les Coches and skied all over the Paradiski area. We drove in mid-morning Saturday after a supermarket stop in Albertville - which is our normal Christmas and Easter routine. It wasn't too bad. We drove out Saturday evening (again our normal routine) and same as when we drive out at Christmas the queues inward were extreme. Outward was fine. Moral of the story is drive in as early as possible. Leaving, less of an issue.

Anybody who knows La Plagne knows the usual bottlenecks and these were definitely much worse - especially mid-morning and mid-afternoon. As ever on a busy week, get out early, ski through lunch, plan well but also chill when you do have to queue.

From what I've read on here I think HT is a bit of a mindset thing.

Happy to answer and questions about driving or how to mitigate the busyness. Although I've never been to St Gervais - so it would only be from a general perspective.

On paper this week (sat 10/01 to Sat 17/01) should be pretty quiet (no school holidays anywhere? ) but richb67 is in Madonna now and just posted in the dolomites thread that it’s busier than he expected with lots of families (from Eastern Europe?) and occasional queues.

It is orthodox new year on the 14th … is this having an unexpected effect ?

And if so - is the effect widespread or limited to the Eastern alps ?

How busy would you expect Les Menuires, 3 Valleys to be w/c 21st feb? Looks like there are still some French, German, Dutch holidays that week.

Two French zones (including Paris) plus various others on holiday - it'll be busy.
