I see Jasmin Taylors recent victory got about a 10 second report with footage on Ski Sunday, about 1/8th of the time dedicated to the free video tosh people send in and less than the time Ed used to explain the nomenclature of free style jumps.

Free is the optional word there. Jaz Taylors footage costs money, so be happy you get a couple of static photos and a brief summary. The only reason they can afford Laax coverage is because Ed and Tim do the English commentary for Redbull.

Shame there is only five episodes this season, although we do have the winter Olympics coming to fill the gap.
Really enjoyed the piece on Dave Ryding as well, what an absolute champion of GB snow sports. He has set the mark for those coming after to match and hopefully surpass!

My personal gripe with Ski Sunday is the disproportionate time given to snowboarding and associated X Games type of competitions which I guess is due to Ed’s support for this side.
We’re in Austria for a month and at a very rough count skiers outnumber snowboarders at least 100 to 1 and agIN l5hough there are snow parks for people to do jumps and tricks there have been hardly anyone using them. Is it different elsewhere?

Nope, skiers far outnumber snowboarders everywhere. I also agree with you on the X-Games stuff, not a fan.

add up the minutes of ski coverage, include all race footage.
then add up the minutes of snowboard coverage.
ski coverage still vastly outweighs the snowboard coverage on ski sunday.

@Illetas, I think that, rather than being because of Ed, it's more likely covered because it's something that the British are likely to have success in and compete in greater numbers (at the top level) than alpine.

@NoMapNoCompass, absolute TOSH Europe yes, but much of Japan you will see 50/50 or often more boarders than skiers to make the most of the deep snow. N America plenty of snowboarders too...

A quick trawl of lots of statistical sites, then applying mean, mode, medians, calculus and trig, I get skiers v snowboarders at 2:1 in Japan, 3:1 USA 4:1 Canada and 5:1 Europe. Considering 65% of all activity appears to be in Europe that swings it further still to number of skiers. I'd say this makes @wiigman the TOSHER here .

Honestly the BBC can be dopes, rather than save time/money by using the Ski Sunday theme music for their Olympic coverage, they’ve only gone and produced new music for it.

The funny thing is young people who might be the target for snowboard and freestyle ski type articles, in the main don’t watch mainstream TV (live or catchup), other than outliers such as Love Island. This is widely known, it’s due to internet, social media, a huge concern for the BBC model in the long term.
So I wonder what the Ski Sunday’s controllers thinking is in making a variable third to two thirds of each episode on snowboard/freestyle?

Age 16’s to 34’s are the age group dramatically watching far less BBC according to a recent Ofcom report. So born 1990 onwards.

@Snow&skifan, don't disagree that that demographic is watching less TV, but there are plenty of people older than that interested in snowboarding and freestyle. For example Ed Leigh is in his 50s, Jenny Jones and Tim Warwood are both in mid-40s.

It is very different in most of Austria.
yes, there are more skiers than snowboarders, but it is more like 8-10:1, nowhere near 100:1 in the Austrian resorts I have skied in.

Circa 2010, it felt like 1 in 3 folk on chairlifts and in gondolas throughout the Alps were boarders. The sport of choice for teens to 35’s.
Anyone here know if boarding is still growing in popularity?

Solid regional growth, good uptake in the Chinese market. NA and Japan is strong - you'll regularly see a substantial cohort of riders. UK scene is good about 33% - a lot of dual users.
A lot of the impression is often to do with conditions and location. If its a cold, icy midweek day in some Austrian backwater hill then yep they'll be hardly anyone. Go to Tignes or Val Thorens late season or on a powder day and it'll be a third or more.

I usually spend two weeks in Tignes, March or April to close out the season. I could count on one hand the number of times I share a lift with a boarder. I would say it 5-10% boarders in resort at that time.

@NoMapNoCompass, My experience is entirely different, but even if it is 10% - so going back and if you're talking about Ski Sunday, about 10% of this years content was snowboarding. 5 x 45minute shows, and we had 3 segments? Maybe 25-30 minutes in total?
I suspect the Sparrow Knox segment in the last show was a late add as they lost an event with the weather, and I know Jenny Jones shot a piece which never made it to air (possibly because Mia Brookes didn't ride at Laax) but that might get used for the Olympic coverage.

Dont they avoid skiers on chair lifts and vice versa seeing as how its awkward for them to dismount. Last time I shared with two of that persuasion with I made sure to agree the direction and order of dismounting to prevent any tangle of limbs.

@Richard_Sideways, I'd agree. With SnowJapan (impartial, and usually very accurate on their snow reports etc) putting skiing in Japan at 60/40 in favour of skiers currently. And that is across Japan, rather than focusing on Hokkaido's snowiest that not surprisingly attract more snowboarders...
@NoMapNoCompass, original quote said: "Nope, skiers far outnumber snowboarders everywhere."
I would not have disagreed if you had added: "in Europe" to the end of that quote.
All we (snowboarders) are saying is that's not quite the global scene/outlook.
And may you have a lovely time surrounded by snowboarders if you've not yet been to northern Japan etc...

Maybe because the winter olympics covers a few more sports than skiing?
But why stop there? Why not use the Match of the Day theme music for the football world cup?

All of the above - have never been on skis in my life, yet still watch the DH, SG, and slalom, although still can't quite work out just how the gates work in Slalom... Red then blue? Left or right? In motorsport they call it cone-blindness. Appreciate it, but never could quite get into the Chilly bowls though.

I think snowboarding is on the increase. In the alpes 5 years ago it was about 1 in 20 now more like 1 in 10 and there are even some younger people taking it up. Much higher proportions in Japan

The group I go boarding with have been going solely to Austria since 2011 and I don't see that snowboarding is growing.
The bulk of the tourists are German and Dutch and they mainly ski from what I see.
WRT Ski Sunday, I watch it no matter what's on cause I like to see the snow and the mountains.
It does surprise me that plenty people on this site don't feel the same.

Nor I, but what constantly baffles me is the level of offence people seem to take that the show has the audacity to offer a selection of winter sports. The show is the definition of a 'magazine' show - the content changes and that's the source of its longevity.

@Richard_Sideways, +1, plenty on here won't be happy unless they're getting an hour long show which Chemmy specifically pitches directly to them.
"hi Gerald, we got your email so this week we have 30 minutes of the DH from Wengen and a 20 minute piece about boot deltas of the Women's slalom field. We also take 5 minutes to gripe about what others have sent in for Ski Social and another 5 to complain about these kids on snowboards and their damn tricks and computer games"

I did think that Sparrow Knox bit was quite random. For sure the Scotty James interview only happened because Mia Brookes didn't turn up to Laax.
I thought the feature with the judges at Laax was really interesting, as was Ed explaining the taxonomy of his descriptions during the freestyle events

It is interesting too to see how different events are judged differently - a World Cup event like Laax is judged very differently to the XGames - and the Natural Selection series differently again although all broadly on similar criteria.

Well, in the spirit of 'toofy-grinning' while poking the bear, do you mean the ones we are objectively internationally respected as "highly competitive and successful" and the ones where we have an ethereally vanishing chance of getting on the podium? Yes, lets.
