 Poster: A snowHead
|
A group of us started doing the Munros in Scotland a few years ago and are at mid 20's so far. Looking to broaden our horizons a bit and have got an opportunity to go to Zell in the autumn. We are not experienced climbers, as in we do not own crampons and ice axes etc but are looking to get some decent height without the help of chairlifts etc. Can anyone suggest a decent climb in the area that would not involve anything too technical or indeed scary. We've done the highest hills in Scotland, England and Wales without difficulty but we are not good enough for getting roped up etc.
Any suggestions of hills would be welcome.
Thanks

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Plenty of good hikes can also be found here: https://www.saalbach.com/en/summer/hiking-outdoor/hiking-map
Be aware that in September/October the vast majority of mountain ‘summer huts’ will be closed, so you’ll need to carry your own provisions. The Pinzgauerspaziergang is from Saalbach to Zell (or vice versa) and gets lots of publicity, but personally I find long stretches of it quite boring. If you’re up for a challenging walk I’d recommend the hike from the Rudolphshutte at Weisssee to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier.

@boabski, You might want to look at hikes into the Steinernen Meer (stone see) above Saalfelden. It is a high limestone plateau with peaks up to 2500m or so. There are some huts (though check closing dates as some close by end of September) but otherwise feels pretty remote, no lifts. Might be the odd snow patch but certainly no need for ice axes etc. If you are going to do walks along these lines make sure you all join the Alpenverein (Austrian Alpine Club) as it makes staying in the huts far easier and cheaper.
Not too far to the south is the Hochalpenstrasse to the Gross Glöckner and the sadly diminished glaciers, worth a trip to see them before it is all gone!

Can't you just walk/climb the ski runs up the Schmittenhohe? There's blues, reds and blacks so varying slopes to climb up. About 1400m climb?
Or are those just "walks" rather than "climbs"?!

Have a look at the Austrian Alpine Club for ideas and also for mountain huts to stay at. The Passauer Hut in the Steinberg is quite cool! https://passauer-huette.de/

@boabski, If you are looking for that sort of effort then besides the Steinernen Meer also the mountains towards the Glockner would be good options, peaks up to 3000m or so with no glaciers. A good starting point might be https://www.gleiwitzerhuette.at/. It is inside the Hohe Tauern National Park.
