I’m always amazed at how unfairly good genes seem to be distributed - the overwhelming majority of the female skiers are not only hugely talented and bonkersly brave but also very pretty. The same applies to the guys- they nearly all look like they’ve stepped out of a cande naste style magazine.
LV fits that picture- but the real reason for admiration is she is arguably the best DH women’s skier of all time.

I think the looks might have something to do with attracting sponsorship which certainly helps on the road to success.

In which case Lara Gut should be making gazillions. Just saying. LV is a marketing machine and helpfully the best skier of all time. The comeback just adds to the 'story' and the brand value.

Her and her team will have the best idea of how feasible it is, given the nature of the injury and what she's done this far.

And it isn't torn, it's a full rupture. Tall order.
Is there someone healthy on the US team who should be skiing in her place?

@Scooter in Seattle, one presumes medics and team management think she's still a good choice?
Regular readers will recall various accounts of folks rupturing their ACLs and basically not noticing.

@under a new name, I skied for 13 years not knowing I had completely snapped it. Came to light when I went in thinking I 'just' needed some meniscus damage fixing, ended up with an ACL reconstruction and a leg-straightening procedure to minimise the pressure on the inside lobe of the knee joint, which is basically bone to bone contact now...

Whereas "bottling it" would have been great preparation for the Olympics? She might have said, "glad I didn't do that, I might have got hurt" after they cancelled it, presumably still after 3 crashes. |
How much prep do you get from skiing terrible visibility on a difficult course? What additional things would she be learning from that and how much impact would that one run (that's all we're talking about, one 90-120 second run) have had? If it had been on the same course that the 'lympic race is then I'd have understood it, as it is I'm amazed so many felt the need to run a race so close to the main event when the season is already overloaded.

The races last weekend were the trial events for the World Championships next year, someone planning to race beyond the Olympics would want to do the race as downhill is all about learning each hill.

However true, no help to LV who is retiring after the O's. As I said before: some of the Austrian men skipped their DH and it was sunny. I'm baffled by her breaking the wand in those conditions, and even more aghast that the coaches didn't shut her down.

A reasonable assumption, but they'd be under extreme pressure to see it that way.
Everyday Joes can deal with a popped ACL, but at the top of the pyramid, in a race decided by hundredths, this can't help.
If she does well it will grow her reputation....Tiger Woods and his broken leg...Curt Shilling's bloody sock (baseball) game etc.
I preferred Stenmark's approach but wish her well nonetheless.

I was absolutely amazed the race went ahead. They cancelled the day before's training run and the weather forecast for race day was worse. Wasn't Crans Montana added last minute or did I dream that?
Is she actually retiring after the Olympics? I read somewhere that if she's in the running for a globe then she'll continue until the end. I don't think pro athletes chase numbers or goals but 3 more wins to beat the great Ingemar Stenmark would have to be a huge incentive.
Scooter, not really sure her rep can get any better can it? I mean she was/is just the best regardless of stats....you can tell I'm a huge fan.

Jonny Wilkinson destroyed his body during the '03 RWC. It's a 'one shot' deal. Go there and deal with the consequences after. It took 3yrs to get him back to full working order.

No he didn't. His insanely committed tackling meant he suffered numerous stingers throughout his career, however he had no major injuries in that tournament. His long sequence of serious injuries started after the tournament and 3 years later he was in the midst of a long run of knee and shoulder injuries

Ultimately if you are not putting your body on the line you aren’t going to a achieve much, burn brightly but not necessarily for a long time. Everyone knows the risks and rewards.

I would think it’s the opposite. She has extremely strong surrounding muscles, so if the knee feels stable, is not swollen, and she wears a brace for additional support, she should be able to ski just fine. Saying that, a DH is going to put massive forces through that knee, and if she gets out of position there’s no ACL for protection so she has one less insurance policy against blowing out her knee and doing significant additional damage. But you’ve got to think it will play on her mind and she can’t go as aggressive as usual. It’s an incredible story. Hope it works out for her…

a bit off topic, but i saw an article on the 'net last night regarding LV.
i hadnt realised that she is one of a set of triplets, with an older sister as well.
there was a recent picture of them all together, they all looked similar (not surprising seeing as there were a set of triplets there )
but none of the others have similar level of skiing ability, but one of them runs her foundation

Obviously that's the strategy. Vonnbot 1.0 retired, Vonnbot 2.0 was the comeback who ruptured it's ACL and Vonnbot 3.0 will race the 'lympics.
