Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I'm thinking of a 4 day solo skiing trip to zillertal, i'm 66, i've previously done mahrhofen and zell, so now i am looking at the hochzillertal area, so where should i stay out of fugen or kaltenbach, i like a beer in the evening, i'll be going b&b so need a few restaurants or take a ways, i fancy doing a tandem paragliding flight, i'm an intermediate skier so i can ski anything except moguls, flying in to innsbruck, so should i choose fugen or kaltenbach....thanks.

@philusher76, personally I think Fügen has a bit more going on than Kaltenbach. There is the Postalm at the bottom of the ski area in Kaltenbach which is usually quite lively, but there's not a huge amount else going on there.

Fügen has the umbrella bar at the bottom of the Spieljochbahn that is popular, and there's a few bars and restaurants around the village, and definitely a kebab/pizza place too.

If you stay in Fügen you'll either have to get the bus up to Hochfügen or bus/train to Kaltenbach to start your day.

If you want to do a tandem paraglide, I've seen this advertised next to the Spieljochbahn. I can't remember the name of the person, but I can walk past on the way home if you want details? The landing spot is in the field below the Spieljochbahn just above the Mia Alpina hotel, so I regularly see them coming in to land when I'm working from home.

Something that I had no idea about before about a week ago was that on Thursday nights there's an evening show in Hochfügen.

https://www.hochfuegenski.com/en/plan-book/experiences-courses/good-morning-gondola-1/

Last night was the first show of the season, and I took part for Ski Check, the school i'm working for.

Lots of synchro skiing, paragliders, fire dancers, music, synchro piste machines etc etc A really fun evening and great atmosphere. There's also night skiing available free of charge to everyone else before the show too.

Well worth checking it out if you happen to be in the area and can get up there. I understand there's bus services that run up there from Fügen.

We had some fresh snow on Sunday evening. I'm not sure how much on the slopes, but Mrs Swskier said it was nice yesterday when she went out.

We skied a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon in Mayrhofen for the first time. Pistes were trashed by the time we got there, but coverage was decent, even on south facing slopes.

We should have a little top up around 10cm tomorrow. We're still yet to have a really major storm this season, hopefully we get one soon! rolling eyes Sad

Somewhere in the region of 10-20cm of snow fell again last night up the mountain. Probably around 5cm down here in the valley. It's not too cold today in the valley, so it's melting a bit, which means the roads are nice a clear.

A nice top up again, which we'll never complain about! snowHead

We unintentionally ended up skiing in Gerlosstein today. Piste conditions were mixed, the blue next to the t bar was nice, all the pistes from/under the chairs were quite stoney, particularly the red down to the long chair, which gets hammered by the sun all day.

The busiest I've seen it up there, but still I'd be surprised if there was as many as 50 skiers. Plenty of sledgers though.

How’s the conditions? Is there an off piste base at all? Would like to come down for some touring the next dump if it’s good.

@Legendarry, I haven't skied since Sunday, and I was teaching then so was only on piste. It's pretty low tide in general, there's off piste available in the right places, but it'll need a real big snowfall to be anything decent and there's nothing in the forecast at the moment.

I'd say it's our worst season so far of the 3 we've been here, but even so, the piste skiing is pretty decent.

@Legendarry, What @swskier, said...

There's also a persistent weak layer in the snow pack which is a serious concern off piste at the moment.

We've been in the Zillertal for the last two weeks and whilst the overall snow cover is very poor (looks more like the end of March than the end of Jan/beginning of Feb with the temperature in the valley on Tuesday 13C!) the piste skiing is still very good. Whether this will remain true once the school holidays begin and after Fasching remains to be seen. But if it doesn't dump snow soon then I think skiing at Easter in eastern Austria this year will be over. One of the reasons is that the reservoirs for snow making look very empty.

Hi snowheads,
Anyone in Mayrhofen next week fancy meeting up for a half day skiing? We were there two weeks ago and my daughter fell and broke her collarbone. So myself and the wife are splitting our time skiing and looking after her during the day. Not a big lover of skiing on my own. 52 year old Irish male. Good intermediate. Been skiing on and off from 12. Would love to meet up cheers!

Arrived in Munich tonight but our luggage hasn't. So might be looking for gloves, goggles, trousers, etc. Any suggestions if anywhere hires these or best places to get reasonably priced gear in Mayrhofen?

BA, Belfast-Heathrow-Munich. Hopefully it's on a flight to Munich today which means we'll be scrambling for some gear for a day or 2, just need to find cheap gloves and trousers for me, wife and son. Was hiring skis and boots so all fine with that.

@carvetoz, it's a bad season, but the snow making in the Zillertal is very good, so the piste conditions in all areas are good, albeit it's mainly artificial snow.
