Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Any insider knowledge what the 'very exciting' news about mooserwirt being released this week?

Sadly I ruptured my ACL so I'm in the physio phase, really hopeful of getting some easy blues before the season ends (do these exist here....)

I know a couple of people from another Sport who blew their ACL and took them almost 12 months and they are incredibly Fit Pro Players..

I would not do anything if you have an ACL rupture.

ACL tear recovery typically takes 6 to 9 months, with a full return to high-impact sports often requiring up to 12 months,

If you have Surgery recovery time varies.

Skiing with a ruptured ACL is generally unsafe, as the knee's stability is severely compromised, putting you at high risk for further damage to the meniscus or other ligaments. The high-torque, rotational forces of skiing can cause the knee to give way, making it unsafe to hit the slopes without proper rehabilitation or surgical reconstruction.

Seriously , I would go home and rest.. your winter & summer season is Done ..and also your insurance is now not valid for winter sports..

A quick update. I skied in St Anton again today. The on piste snow conditions weren‘t much different ie reasonably good but after midday somewhat chopped up - particularly on the Fang. From late morning, lowish cloud cover meant widespread flat light, particularly near the Schindler. A few Ski routes were open, the highlight again being the Schindlerkar. The Schindler Hang was also theoretically doable, but looked as bare as the bottom end of the Mattun yesterday: I had brought decent skis this time so gave it a miss. (Following the Mattun yesterday one pair of skis is already in ski hospital receiving emergency surgery Eh oh! .) Relatively quiet.

That's bad luck. Unsurprisingly there a number of threads on this particular subject here. Two schools of thought, get an op or let it heal without one, advocates of both, if you ask you will get lots of advice. However the most important thing is to take proper advice from doctors and physios. Sure the local bods in St Anton will have lots of experience and will be able to best advise on when you can ski again, whatever route you choose it is hard work in the gym. If you wait until back in the UK there is a member here, Jonathon Bell who is a knee specialist who has much experience with ski and other sports injuries (including professionals) so maybe worth a visit.

If you do get back on skis this season easy blues might include the run down from Kapall and the blues down from Gampen (though the Hoppelweg is simply a track.

More time for the Moose & KK - not good for the training though!

Good old Stanton to give a large wave of positivity lol

I know plenty of skiers who ski with zero ACL's, I am not sure if I'll be one of them who can manage but going to do physio here as I imagine they'll be specialists in comparison to back in the UK.

Also with regards to the surgery it seems like Innsbruck is the best place in the world for it, so it may make sense to get that here (if needed).

I've also already paid for the accomodation for the season so seems a waste to just throw that away and effectively pay rent twice while in the UK...also feels a complete waste of a visa so I'll continue to enjoy the Alps.

It's quite mad the result tbh, I was adamant it was just a lil bruising. Was very shocked the MRI showed a rupture (I didn't even know what an ACL was prior to the result tbh)

@badatbetting, although this confuses me greatly I have to agree with Stanton. i don't know how old you are, I suspect you are relatively young, but if you can, please wait until appropriate, and get surgery done if needed. It will massively affect a close to 100% recovery for your knee. Other wise you will likely incur lifelong knee problems and that is no fun. Its up to you, but you are getting good advice here. Also, you can get a job in a bar and enjoy the rest of the season and use the down time to learn to play the guitar or saxophone or what ever floats your boat.

I'm 36, I plan to do the surgery currently but I'm following the doctors/physios protocols. They advised a two months physio prior to the surgery anyway, and they both said I should hopefully be able to do some easy runs before the end of the season then likely get surgery in like May (if it's deemed necessary). There are a billion views online about how useful the surgery actually was, and it sounds like arthritis risk is higher whether you get surgery or not (sadly).

I appreciate all input tho as I I didn't know what an ACL was a week ago, I've been heavily educating myself since then (chatgpt is surprisingly good for this poo-poo).

Sadly due to Brexit I can't work here, but I like partying a lot so I'll keep myself busy.

I have met a shocking amount of elite skiers who blew their ACL (or both) and are completely fine, they think I'm being a baby taking a rest currently.

@badatbetting, Bad luck dude. But yeah, take full advantage of the Austrian healthcare system as much as you can. Both the speed and level of service are likely to be higher than you'd get in the UK, and getting you skiing again will be their priority from the start. They are also far, far more experienced with ski injuries, and so your outcome is likely to be better.

Oh my! I blew my ACL right after xmas in Lech! Was skiing with my little daughter and ruptured it in a slow twisting fall on ice.
i was advised to do surgery and after a nights consideration had it done right there in Lech.
So far so good, but skiing season is naturally over. Sad
Good luck for you, but almost everybody has it done (surgery) sooner or later...

yes everything was covered by insurance (I am German). I felt instability in the knee, and thought ski season is over anyways, so why wait... I know there are so many different opinions on the topic, but I thought its better do do it right away (24 hrs after the injury). Also, they do surgery on the ACL every day. However I have heard Innsbruck is quite experienced, as well as Montafon/Dr. Schenk.

You need to be certain if its just a tear or a Full Rupture..These differences can be lost in Doctors translation (German/English) If your hobbling around it is probably just a common tear. Full Rupture you will not be walking..

As for paid for accommodation...Presumably you have Full travel insurance (medical, accident ,ski, medical, repatriation etc) and compulsory 3rd party ? Then this would be a genuine insurance claim imo

Now you have visited a Medical Facility they will have a record that can be checked on by insurance companys.

I would contact your insurance company ASAP and ask them what you should(need to do ??

I doubt surgery is needed (unlikely if your walking) but if the medics advise it to be done in Austria & rehab at least let the insurance company know ASAP ..They may say No and arrange repatriation for surgery and recovery nearer your home

The REAL problem is if you attempt to go skiing and apres/night club partying and fall and make it worse etc... The insurance company will probably refuse to pay anything out due to you not informing them of the initial incident & medical advice

Of course its up to you but like I said above your insurance for skiing at this point in time is now basically void and 3rd party is compulsory at all times (not just skiing) .that also why you should contact them to keep the 3rd party still valid..

Forget driving a Car , insurance is invalid.

It was a full rupture, I've had two opinions and also chatgpt agrees the MRI shows that.

I can walk fine. I obviously won't drive though, just getting my flatmate as a chauffeur.

I notified the insurance when I got the MRI result. I doubt they'll cover surgery but are covering the physio. If they cover surgery obviously that's the dream tho. I don't know why you assumed I didn't tell them lol

I suffered an equivalent injury about 15 years originally caused by an awkward twisting slip on ice carrying heavy suitcases to a hotel in St A. I thought nothing much of it, only for a ligament to „let go“ 3 days later while attempting a jump turn on the steep part of the Maroikopf above Langen. Fortunately, the off piste group I was with helped me to sideslip down, tho‘ I nearly passed out with pain attempting a turn. I decided against surgery, but for 2 seasons replaced downhill skiing with Langlauf (no twisting), and mountain walking with road biking (ditto, apart from clipping in & out of the pedals!) Ca 30 months after the original accident I was able (rather gingerly) to return to downhill skiing and mountain walking. The point of this anecdote is that you may have to be patient & look for alternative sports in the meantime..

@stanton,
I am a coper, no ACL & no meniscus for 4 years now. Have been playing o50 football tournaments on it without any significant issues.

Just got back 2 weeks ago from a week skiing at Lech - knee was just fine, but I chose not to go off-piste.

It all depends on your own situation and stability. There are recent scientific papers in the US and Britain that discuss the coper alternative for select individuals/circumstances.

Yeh I am currently looking like I am not a 'coper', but I've only had two physio sessions so far, hopefully after a month I can get a better idea where I am at. I enjoy hearing about people who ski amazingly without acl's, genuinely some of the best skiers I know have zero!

Skied in St Anton this morning from 8.30 - 12.30. Flat light early on was replaced by sunny weather. On piste conditions were surprisingly good: poor cover elsewhere limited my Ski Route options to the Schindlerkar (yet again). Contemplated the Mattun which this time was officially open & seemed to have better cover than last week when the bottom half was a rock scrape. Eventually decided against it after talking to a couple on the lift who had done it yesterday and said it was „schrecklich“. On the last run down, the bottom pistes were Sulz & it was +7 in the village.

Just an indication of how low the snowpack is this season..

The road connection between Warth and Lech is Open ..

This is normally closed all season due to Avalanche risk (although its more likely they do not want the Germans using it as a short cut)

I cannot remember ever when this road link (L 198) was open at this time of year

Avalanche in Stuben

Stuben am Arlberg (Vorarlberg), three skiers were swepted and (partly) buried on Saturday afternoon. The Austrian police have now started an investigation and are calling on two unknown skiers and any witnesses to come forward. According to the police, traces indicate that the avalanche may have been caused by these skiers.

Two descent tracks

The incident took place on the Maroiköpfe. Above the slope where the avalanche went off, two fresh descending tracks were found. Based on this, the police suspect that the avalanche was triggered by two skiers. After causing the avalanche, these skiers did not continue their descent, but climbed back up about 150 meters towards the Maroiköpfe.

The victims were part of a ski and avalanche science course.

The group had started Saturday around noon with a ski trip to the Maroiköpfe. Shortly after the start of the climb, a slab avalanche broke loose about 80 meters above the group.

The 70-year-old guide and a 33-year-old student were completely swept away by the avalanche and carried over rocky terrain.

Both were completely buried. They were treated on the spot by the mountain rescue and then transferred to hospitals in Feldkirch and Dornbirn.

The guide was seriously injured. A third student, also 33 years old, was partially buried. She managed to free herself.

Police are looking for witnesses
