I'd say it's more useful the other way around, no? Bardonecchia's main slopes are quite a bit lower than those of Sauze. And the timing does seem to favor trips starting in Bardonecchia

It will benefit both places I think. If the links are closed in Sauze you will enjoy a change of resort after about 2 days. So a jaunt to Bardo would be very welcome I think.

Bardonecchia is a better ski area anyhow.
Smaller, but better. Much longer slopes, better gradient. And a lift company that does not close whole sectors to save money.

Three skiers were caught in an avalanche in Montgenèvre on Friday, December 26th at 11:00 AM. The avalanche occurred on a route popular with ski tourers, in the Combe de la Doire valley, descending from the Rocher de l’Aigle. Two of them managed to free themselves. The third was rescued several minutes after being buried.
I was off the back of MG in another sector and heard a lot of stuff going on, some natural (risk 4) and other stuff thought might be sound carrying from avy control.
Was quite a memorable sortie in a number of ways doing a mini road trip from Serre hoping for Retour d'Est tracks, will put together a more detailed blog piece tomorrow.

Interesting, interesting. It has been on my radar for years (cheap + direct train from Paris, where I live!), but I have never been able to convince anyone to come with since it seems a bit low and disjointed on paper.

Hi folks, heading out to Sauze on the 4th and looking for some hints and tips please. 1st off looking for recommendations for ski hire for my late teen son, decent skier and ideally would like all mountain/twin tip ski, could anyone recommend a shop that would be a good bet to hire from? We've gone for the area pass which I believe allows for 2 'away' days, I've seen the above post about Bardonecchia and it sounds like its worth a day over there, how about Montgenevre? Is the monsguide bus the best option or are there others? Is Claviere classed as part of the Montgenevre area or can it be skied without using up one of your 'away' days? It does seem a hike to get over but looks to have some long runs. Last question any recommendations for lift served off piste, we won't have avi gear with us so won't be straying far, would there be an area worth heading for if we get some fresh? Its been about 25 years since i was last there and really looking forward to it, thanks Al

@Origin_Al, no worries, I deleted it myself. I must have got confused with another shop I researched recently (where twin tips could be selected at a reasonable price level) because when I rechecked Eydallin it seems wider skis are only available at the top range bracket. That might still suit you but wasn't what I was thinking of and I didn't want to give you incorrect info.

Bardonecchia definitely worth a visit, in my opinion. Three of four days in Bardonecchia, then a day in each of Sansicario and Sauze d'Oulx makes for an excellent week of skiing. Melezet is north facing and actually quite high, 1400m to 2400m. Campo Smith and Les Arnauds not too low really and both north facing too. Jafferau I think is east facing, but goes up high to around 2700m - a great mountain that you can ski the same run, all day, over and over again. There are now enough fast lifts that make it not an issue to take one of the remaining slow lifts. Blues and reds that are at the top of their rating, in my opinion - long, fast runs through the trees that make you puff. Lift passes, ski hire, food and beer all pretty good value. What's not to like? Give it a go, don't expect the 3V or EK, and you should have a decent time.

Hi glad it was you and not me, its to easy to be unintentionally rude on the internet! I had a look at that shop and will maybe drop them a message to find out what they have, don’t think he’ll thank me for a 110+ wide ski if the forecasted thaw/freeze comes true…

Looking for next winter.

I have read about people doing a season in Oulx. From there you can easily get to the various Milky Way resorts by public bus and over to Bardonecchia by train. Serre Chevalier also by bus I think.

Just got back from a week in Montgenevre.
Thin depths across the board none of the higher level tows in operation North or south of the town.
South of the town All of the reds heavily mogulled or closed, The blues Pre charre and les Pousin have gullies and holes at points. there is interest and practice there but not really much fun.
Gondrans (green) seems to be getting a lot of piste input and despite the traffic was being well looked after overnight.
Rhodes and Vallon getting lots of traffic but seemed ok.
Soureous was good with more ice on the steeper sections in the deepshade as the week wore on.
Claviere had better snow, flater pistes and repaid the effort of getting back which was worse than normal with stony areas on the narrow descent to Tremplin.
North of the village only Pharo and Combe de lac in action every day with fourneous in action some days.
Le refuge in the square has closed down and Le Capitane is now doing lunch meals and tappas/charcuterie options and drinks in the afternoon great flavours, warm welcome, same chap. Now called GustoChic, smarter inside now.
If you are planning a week there before any more snow falls Id say strongly consider planning time in Claviere if you like variety.

Hello quick update on the snow conditions here. Arrived on Sunday and pistes have been hard packed until today when it has pretty much snowed all day and is forecast to snow again tomorrow so those coming next week should have nice conditions.
On the bus front we took the 910 bus from Sauze to Bardo (bus was a little bit late) and the 1510 back getting off at the 1st stop in Sauze. Short walk downhill to the Jeauvencaux Sportinia lift. Otherwise it’s a blue route bus, a taxi or walk back into town. You need to go to the ticket office in Bardo to get your free day pass as the ViaLattea one doesn’t work. On the skiing front we had a good day and worth the effort to get there.

We're heading out 1st Feb. As most people do I've been tracking the conditions. There's been regular snowfall the past couple of weeks and more to come this week. I've very hopeful it means great conditions.

@mrvinegar, the snow was getting rather thin in places but there was a fair amount over Friday/the weekend which should have helped. I suspect many of the pistes that were closed last week, will stay closed this week. I didn't ski quite all the way down into Sauze, but not far off, and mostly the snow was hard but not too icy.

Does the free bus to bardoneccia leave and return from the next to the Carrefour supermarket? Is there a locker to put walking boots in at bardoneccia or do we have to walk to Carrefour in ski boots,
Also, where does the sauzeonline bus start and finish..same place ??

The bus stop for the free bus is about 300m up the hill on the opposite side of the road from the Carrefour. There is a bus stop opposite for the way back. There is also a second stop about 1km further down towards the edge of the town that we got off on the way back. Don’t know if there ate lockers at Bardoneccia.

Does anyone know, if you have a mont de la luna skipass in montgenevre there is two days of sestriere included. Can we just go by car to cesana and there enter the lifts with our skipass? Or do we need to get another skipass at the skipass office?

Thinking about going to Milky Way first week of 2027 (Jan 2 to Jan 9). Are there any reasonable ways to get there without rental car: ski bus/train/bus from a main city like Milan or Turin???

@alex_sauvage, fly to Turin and take the train from the airport into Turin, change for Oulx and get the bus to where you want to stay. I believe it’s that simple

Its automatically on your card so just pitch up to Cesana and off you go. Doing it that way also saves the boring long & cold chairs transfers across the valley.

You've got the Sauze/Sansicario/Sestriere half, and you've got the Montgenevre/Claviere half. Sansicario's the most central of the villages, but the best spot would be in Sestriere near the Fraiteve gondola.

@alex_sauvage, Sestriere is pretty good; depends on what you want from a resort though. It has all the amenities you'd need I guess, and the slopes are a really good mix, plus you have the Fraitive gondola. We stayed in the Grand Hotel, which we thought was lovely - great staff, big rooms, good food - but that was a TO package. There seems to be a lot of other B&Bs and Hotels to choose from. Maybe check out Sunweb and see if there's anything on there with the lift pass bundled in.
