Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Spending New Year's evening on a mountain hut in the St. Anton area - any recommendations?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We are in St. Anton from 29 December to 5 January 2012/13 and are looking into spending New Year's eve on a mountain hut!

Any recommendations?

I have seen a thread talking about spending New Year's Eve in town but nothing on spending it up in the mountains so if anybody recalls a similar discussion on here that would be also helpful!

Thanks! snowHead snowHead

You can hike/skin up from St Christoff to the Galzig... Admittedly the building may not be open, but pack some beer/champagne/whisky/fireworks. I've never been up for New Year, but there's often a few people and a good atmosphere up there on full moon nights. Fun to ski back down Kandahar when it's deserted too.

Thanks! Excellent suggestions so far! Madeye-Smiley

clarky999, how long did it take you to skin/hike up to the Galzig - so that I can "not living in the mountains most of the year" additional time it's likely to take to it? snowHead

Would it not be more comfortable to stay IN the hut? Might be a bit draughty perched on the roof.

Rodelhutte, walk up from St Jakob, up the Rodelbahn.

Griabli - brilliant anytime, can get there by taxi if feeling lazy.

Sennhutte - great food and craic.

Bifangalm - take you up te hill in their own tracked van.

You'll need to book, most places stop serving food at about 3pm NY Eve to get ready, and they know how to celebrate!! Very Happy

schneeflocke, Should be no more than an hour tops really. Get a taxi to the bottom of the piste at St Christoff.

Rodelhutte is also a good shout.

I assume the Moose must be doing something, but it barely counts as being 'up a mountain' (it's a ten minute walk up the piste) - same for Griabli/Taps/Sennhutte IMO. I'm sure they'd be great fun though, depends what you want I guess.

clarky999, 10 minutes up to Senn, Mooswirt and Griabli..........you sure?....... more like 30 to Mooswirt/ Griabli from Galzigbahn bottom station and another 15 to Senn I'd say.

I have a feeling that my namesake , Ulmerhutte, is the only true, on mountain hut open in winter in the Arlberg.

10 mins to the Moose for sure (from Galzig) - I've done it. A little more for the Sennhutte, of course.

Edit: Up the piste, I mean.

clarky999, Cross purposes- I was talking up the road past Kertess to Moos and under the tunnel, yes 10-15 mins up the piste no problem but you'd either be sat all night with wet feet or in ski boots (i would in my apres boots anyway!) which isn't great on NYE.

Thanks for these! Will try for the Ulmerhuette once their booking for the winter season opens on 1 October and may do one of the other suggestions another evening.

schneeflocke, The Hotel Mondschein in Stuben has a wee hut somewhere above Stuben - don't know where exactly but might be worth getting in touch with them?

None of the places mentioned so far are Mountain huts, they are all commercial restaurants.
The real mountain huts are owned by locals & you also have the summer huts.

The last most famous NYE party on the mountain (KK)ceased a few years ago.

I cannot think why you would want to be up on the hill when it all happens downtown!

If you want proper remote and high mountain, as stanton is suggesting, maybe try the Darmstaetter Huette, as seen here:

http://youtube.com/v/_wWLzJgTGck&list=UUSs_qzWZBpG1cnxnwCqgk6A&index=8&feature=plcp

Quite a treck to get to it though, and I think you'd ahve to take all your own stuff in...

Edit: Think they spelt it wrong in the video, I'm pretty sure it's this place - http://alpenverein-darmstadt.de/huetten/darmstaedterhuette/. I don't know how 'open' it is officially in winter, but there are enough skiing videos of/around it on youtube, so I guess it's possible to sort something out, but have no idea personally.
