Poster: A snowHead
|
First time I will be taking my own car over for a long drive to the Alps and a couple of very small questions for all you knowledgeable people
1) Do I need to alter my headlights for driving on the 'wrong' side? Are there stickers or something that I need to get and if so where do I get them?
2) Do I need to get a GB sticker or is this outdated now - is it an optional extra?
Thanks very much in advance

MrDan, you need some beam converters, Halfords or similar will have some. A GB sticker still necessary I think, unless you have a European style number plate. Oh, and you also need to carry a set of spare bulbs, a warning triangle, and a first aid kit. Depending on your destination you may also need a high-vis vest, and perhaps snow chains. Carry your registration and insurance documents, and driving licence with you at all times.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

MrDan,......."snowHeads" stickers trimmed to suit your sub-lens are very fashionable and a fraction of the cost of 'Beam Converters'.
There are other mandatory requirements for various European countries, such as Spare light bulbs, Warning Triangles, etc, etc, Check out the RAC or AA websites for full information on the countries you intend to visit.
Happy days....

BernardC,tried that, they came off though. The ones we bought at the Eurotunnel terminal (AA shop) stayed on the best.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Big fan of insulation tape myself. BernardC, is right you need to check such sites. It's also different depending which country you are heading for.

You'll need to Register first of course.

MrDan, Buy your converters from Halfords (bit cheaper). Although insulation tape is waay cheaper, you'll find that your headlights will be nearly useless at night

Just thought I'd add to this one - If you are an owner of a car with those Xenon Hid headlights - the fancy bright white /blue ones you see more of these days, check the manual about headlight stickers. I have a VW Passat with them and you CANNOT use stick on beam convertors!!

ski, thanks. Went to Halfords and picked up a pair of these things and a GB sticker all in one pack for the bargain price of £8 of my hard earned. Still, better safe than sorry and can't really complain. I now also have a triangle ("borrowed" from a colleague), and a set of spare bulbs (I think they may even fit my car but not really sure...). Going on Friday night really late so can't wait now! Thanks for all the help.

We bought beam dippers locally and they were diabolical didn't stick or anything so we coughed for the £6.99 ones at the port - winced at the price, but they were brilliant - lovely and sticky and the sort of see through ones that didn't knock out half the light

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Megamum, sounds like the ones we got last year. We won;t bother next week, as it won't be dark when we're driving.

I use a PVC base with a layer of gaffer tape on top - sticks well and easy to peel off afterwards as the gaffer tape pulls all the PVC tape off in a single movement.

You know it makes sense.

Have you ever seen continental trucks over here with beam converter's stuck to their headlamps?
|
Next time I see a continental car with beam converters will be the first time, yet another case of UK complying and the rest of the EU ignoring the rules. I can't even find any here in Spain
