Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Gethin89, I would also recommend either Charlotte (Easiski) or Alex Chapman (https://tiptopskicoaching.com/) mentioned by Claud B at the head of this thread. I will be in L2A myself (solo skier) that week also. If you need anything happy for you to PM me.

@Gethin89, BASS, Rod Frazer, is very good. I know Rod and his wife who works with him well and there are some good reports earlier in this thread. He is the L2A branch of BASS which is in many resorts. That is about the going rate for independents here. Bigger schools are cheaper.

Got up for a couple of hours late morning as the sun was trying. Cloud won though and light was very flat. Snow is great though. A mixture of snow then rain in resort the next 2 days. Shedloads due on the glacier.

Storm building here, rain and strong winds already. Due to strengthen this afternoon and turn to snow. Tonight very heavy snow turning to rain. Lower lifts open but I suspect that may not be the case later. Better than Alpe d'Huez where my girlfriend is this week, everything closed all day.

Hi all, sorry for the late reply, I have been "stuck down a crevasse" Laughing

Awaiting to hear back from the companies that have been recommended to us, good to know the going rate, much appreciated.

Thanks again

Hi,
Probably the wrong place to post but was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for ski school.
I'm heading to Les Deux Alpes from the 6th till the 13th and was just looking for a school that does good group lessons.
Most of the recommendations I find are for private, which accost to much. Also is it best to buy lessons online or email or call into them the day before.
Thanks Squedwardx

@Squedwardx, All the options are in the first post on this thread. European Ski School prob best unless you're looking for something more specialist. Quiet week but I'd still contact them in advance.

Maeva apartments, Place de Venosc? They do seem to get filled with lots of noisy youngsters. Not been inside though. Not far from me, near lifts and plenty of bars and restaurants.

At 2am the snow was building nicely on my balcony, by 7.30 it had turned to rain and washed it all away. Due to continue all day. Just a few beginner slopes open, enormous blasts echoing around resort. Avi level 5. Can't see much opening any time soon.

Forecast is better ie it looks as if skiing is possible for tomorrow and Saturday.

I know it must be rubbish for all those in resort, but for someone who is heading out at the start of Feb all this snow is fantastic. Just going on the webcams and the snow on rooftops / roads you can see how little effect the rain is having on the base. The amount of snow up top looks excellent.
Keep up the reports, its making the days at work far easier Very Happy

@Claude B, I've been lurking on this thread since the start of the season ahead of our trip out this Saturday - thanks for your updates - has been great to follow! How's the rain situation today? Avalanches all over the western alps it seems with a lot of resorts closed.

First time in the resort for a few years and if the calmer forecast holds up then could be great conditions early next week! Haven't seen a La Grave thread so far this year and expected it may still be a bit early? (...not to mention lethal after the last few days)

@abbosphere, Rain has stopped for the moment. Some lifts running but nothing high. More blasting just now.

Tomorrow and Saturday look good for skiing with precipitation Sunday and Monday, freezing level around or just above resort level. Loads and loads of snow higher, not sure of impact of rain lower.

La Grave is more complicated now. No free or discounted passes for us and no tow over. Later in the season hopefully will get round somehow.

@Claude B, didn't realise it'd gotten more complicated with La Grave (been a few years since we've been to L2A). Is that due to early season and the link not being open or they've just stopped altogether? Was optimistic coming at this time anyway but had heard with the early season snow it was skiable (before the storm this/last week happened!)

Nonetheless, first trip of the season excitement is well and truly here. Hope the lifts open up today and you get to explore what's up there.

@abbosphere, Mountain politics. La Grave is now operated by SATA the operators of Alpe d'Huez. No agreement with here.

Actually skied at Alpe d'Huez today with my girlfriend and her son. Cracking day, beautiful snow and the sun came out this afternoon. Not open at the top though so Sarenne and Tunnel off limits. Back here tomorrow, forecast even better Very Happy

@Claude B, shame about La Grave. Not my thing now, but I've had happy days there - and I'd like to think that the traditional arrangements with L2A could be restored again. I have memories of proposals to link L2A with ADH - is that all off now?

Yesterday it wasn't open up to 3200m when I went up at lunchtime, not sure whether it opened at all. Pistes were a bit icy after overnight freeze and I didn't ski that much tbh.

Today was forecast to be very cloudy with slight snow. Decided, as part of my January regime, to skin up Vallee Blanche. Hard work and light was really flat. Skied down twice and didn't really enjoy it. Racing up there too today for UK Army, Royal Artillery Championship I think. I believe it was closed higher again today due to high winds. Forecast to be dull with snow most of the week.

They opened the top later on but with the weather coming in and the drift visible from way down the mountain we decided to avoid it too. Very flat light all day but made the most of the protected pistes today - Diable was a lot of fun and a good training session for the first days skiing of the season. Fingers crossed for some snow tomorrow and then slightly clearer skies later in the week 🤞🏽

Rested my legs yesterday, another flat light day, didn't look inviting. It's snowed much of the night and is still falling now, due to continue all morning. Lots of blasting atm. Another rest day with French lesson this afternoon. Forecast looks pretty good after today up to Saturday Very Happy

Interesting article here by Alex Chapman on the effects of Eleanor up the mountain. She is an instructor here and has added insight as her husband is a pisteur on the glacier.

Hi! New to SH, so go easy on me.

I'm travelling to L2A early Feb for a long weekends skiing (have small kids and feel too guilty leaving them for any longer!). Staying at Hotel Turan close to the Village 1800 lift, anyone know if this is any good? We picked it due to how close it was to the lift.

Also, I'm driving from Geneva, so any advice on the journey or driving once in resort? The fact that you can ski below our hotel suggests that i'll need the chains on at some point.

@Roscoe, welcome to snowHead I don't know the hotel but know where it is. As it suggests it's at 1800m, above the main resort which is 1650m. Village lift takes you up to Crete from where you can take further lifts up the mountain. Easy to ski back there via Black, Green or Blue (with an extra poma at the bottom to get you higher).

Driving from Geneva is ok. Take Grenoble road then road to Oisans resorts. In resort there is a reasonably steep road up to 1800. Kept clear though as it's on the ski bus route. Free covered parking up there too.

@Claude B - Thanks for the welcome and advice. Our party of 6 has the full range of abilities, so glad our choice of hotel (for everyone to ski down) seems a good choice. Is it a long walk to the "centre" for bars, rests, etc?

Plan was to take the A41 toward Grenoble then on to LDA from there. How long is the journey time? 3 hours? Would have preferred to fly into Grenoble but no flights for the days we needed.

@Roscoe, 25 minutes or so depending on conditions underfoot. 3 hours should be ok depending on what time you hit Grenoble, and the weather of course.

@Roscoe, There are some but I've never used them. No rank as such. You could walk back via a few bars to make it easier. Could probably get ski bus down and some restaurants run a bit of a taxi service. There are some bars and restaurants at 1800m too.

I'd put off skiing with friends here for the week long enough so went up although forecast wasn't great. By staying low most of the time we actually had a decent day, even the very light snow wasn't too much of a problem. The snow was very, very nice. Sun did put in an appearance later and we ventured up to 3200m but it was far too cold. Forecast is good for next 3 days.

Last but one run down Super Diable.

Beautiful sunshine, beautiful snow but boy was it cold and it got colder as the day went on. -20 plus inc windchill at top, I only ventured as far as 3200m and didn't hang around long there. Similar for next 2 days before snow starts to arrive Sunday continuing for several days, quite heavily in midweek.

The old Grand Couloir now less imaginatively named something like Bellecombe 8. Piste skis weren't the best option Shocked

Beautiful day today, not quite as cold and blue sky. The snow is still fantastic. A bit busier than usual for a Saturday, a lot of Grenoblois came up for the day. A lot of very good skiers about but also rear entry boots, fartbags and monoskis Very Happy 4th day running I've skied hard but with the weather changing I want to make the most of the sun Very Happy

Far better than forecast today with a reasonable amount of sunshine, but very cold. The snow is still great and it's pretty quiet. I went up for half the day with a couple of friends and covered a reasonable amount of ground. Snow due tonight and if the forecast is to be believed it will continue until Saturday, very heavy at times.

Sounds like this weather will shut the lifts down for a few days!

@Claude B - What are the average temperatures for early Feb?? I'm thinking of purchasing a ski balaclava but have had past experiences of them becoming too hot. Likely to be as i've skied later in the year.

@Roscoe, I've been wearing a thin one under my helmet a lot recently. Who knows what the weather will do it's impossible to predict. It's generally the windchill. It was -7°C but windy at 3200m on Monday and my hands, feet and many other parts felt very cold.
